Illinois: Police investigating after cat shot with arrow

ILLINOIS -- Authorities in St. Clair County are investigating a brutal case of animal cruelty.

It’s one of the worst that veterinarians and animal advocates say they’ve ever seen.

"Sixteen years of doing this I have never had an animal with an arrow through it,” said Lisa McCormick, the founder of the non-profit group Partners for Pets.

On Friday morning, authorities responded to a call in Caseyville for reports of a stray cat that someone had shot with a pink arrow.

"The feathers on the end already had blood on them. This wasn't first animal hit by this arrow. They don't consider an animal's life worth anything and were taking target practice at it,” McCormick said.

X-rays show the arrow went through the cat’s entire mid-section. Amazingly, veterinarians at Horseshoe Lake Animal Hospital said it didn’t do any major damage.

"We're amazed. It’s kind of a miracle he's doing as well as he is. When he first came in he didn't have a good prognosis,” said Dr. Ryan Jacob.

The cat made it through an emergency surgery, and now it’s receiving fluids and medicine as it begins to recover.

Dr. Jacob said, "Knock on wood, he hasn't had a lot of air in the thorax and we're hoping tomorrow morning, if he's eating, we can remove his chest tube.”

The goal is to have the cat ready for a new home in a few weeks. Partners is looking for one where he won’t be in danger.

"Hopefully this won't happen again and hopefully we'll find out who did this too,” McCormick said.

The group thought about naming the cat Robin Hood, but decided on Arrow instead. They are accepting donations for his medical care.
