Michigan: Court orders Deborah Lewandowski to pay $13K in restitution in Alpena animal abuse case

MICHIGAN -- A woman who was sentenced to probation after an animal cruelty case in Alpena County has now been ordered to pay thousands of dollars in restitution.

Debra Lewandowski (also spelled Deborah Lewandowski on other news sites) was ordered by a judge on Tuesday to pay $13,350.46 in restitution for the expenses that Alpena County Animal Control has to pay for the care and treatment of the animals that were rescued.

Lewandowski was sentenced back in March to five years of probation. She also was given six months in jail which is a delayed sentenced, which means if she doesn't violate her probation, she won't serve jail time.

Lewandowski pleaded guilty in February to animal abandoning/cruelty to ten or more animals.

The Alpena County Sheriff's Office searched the home located in Alpena County back in August. Deputies say they found more than 80 animals that were abused and neglected.

Animals that were seized from the property included dogs, pigs, donkeys and other livestock.

At a hearing in December, witnesses testified that animals were living in poor conditions, with hooves on several horses overgrown. Among the animals were two dozen Cocker Spaniels and the dogs had what were described as severe flea infestations. A veterinarian says two horses, a dog and a donkey needed to be euthanized because of their poor health.
