West Virginia: Police say Charles Cottrill abused his 8 month old puppy

WEST VIRGINIA -- According to Parkersburg Police, majority of animal cruelty cases they deal with center on animal neglect.

Whether that's food deprivation, an unloving home, or unsanitary conditions.

That wasn't the case for Trooper.

On Monday night, police responded to a Parkersburg home to reports of animal abuse.

Upon arrival, they found Charles Cottrill and his 8-month-old puppy, Trooper, covered in blood.

Cottrill got upset with Trooper for getting into the trash, and decided to discipline him.

"It was way above and beyond what discipline should be for a pet of that size or any kind of pet for that matter," said Parkersburg Police Chief Joe Martin.

He had repeatedly punched Trooper in the mouth, lifted him up, and smashed him down on a metal cage.

Police contacted a local vet and the Humane Society, beginning Trooper's road to recovery.

"Even while he had horrific injuries to him, and he was bleeding and crying, he still was wagging his tail as we leaned down to give him a kiss and tell him it would be ok," said Michelle Earl, executive director of Parkersburg Humane Society.

Trooper underwent emergency surgery in Columbus and is now recovering.

After two weeks in foster care, the Humane Society says they will begin to look for his home.

"What I would like to see from him I guess, more than other animals that haven't been through the same situation as he's been through, is that he can be in a home where he can trust that people are kind," said Earl.

Earl says with Trooper's resilient personality, she expects him to move on.

As for Cottrill, he's currently behind bars at the North Central Regional Jail for cruelty to animals and domestic battery.

A case of animal abuse sends a dog into emergency surgery and its owner to jail.

Monday, Parkersburg Police responded to reports of animal cruelty at 1215 23rd Street.

Inside the home, officers say they discovered 22-year-old Charles M. Cottrill intoxicated. They also found a beagle seriously injured.

A woman living in the home says Cottrill beat the dog for getting into the trash. When she tried intervening, the woman says Cottrill attacked her.

Eventually, she says, Cottrill turned back to the dog. She says he smashed the dog into its kennel with such force, it caused a large gash exposing muscle.

The dog was sent to Columbus, Ohio for emergency surgery.

A second dog was removed from the home.

Cottrill is arrested and charged with domestic battery and cruelty to animals.

As of Tuesday, he remains in the North Central Regional Jail after failing to post his $31,000 bond.
