New York: Bing Jie Yang, 24, found guilty in dog's fatal beating

NEW YORK -- A Westbury man accused of beating his small dog to death last year was found guilty of misdemeanor animal cruelty Thursday, according to Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas.

Bing Jie Yang, 24, a student from China studying in the United States, faces up to one year in prison for “brutally disciplining” his two-year-old Pomeranian named Dan Dan after the dog had an accident in his apartment, the DA says.

The trial lasted five days and the jury deliberated for approximately three hours.

On April 7, 2015, Yang brought an injured Dan Dan to a veterinary hospital for treatment, officials said. A joint investigation by NCSPCA and the NCDA Animal Crimes Unit revealed Dan Dan suffered from blunt force trauma throughout his body, including fractured ribs, a fractured liver and internal bleeding.

Attempts to revive the dog were unsuccessful and he eventually died.

“The defendant mercilessly beat a small, defenseless dog and left the animal with broken ribs and severe internal injuries that killed him,” Singas said in a press release.

According to Gary Rogers of the Nassau County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, animal cruelty is a very serious issue in Nassau County.

“Crimes against animals will not be tolerated and we are grateful to the Nassau County SPCA for bringing us this case,” Singas said.

Yang is due back for sentencing on Sept. 15.
