Virginia: Campbell County investigators looking for whoever crammed a dog into a crate, shot him in the head, and then left him to die

VIRGINIA -- Investigators in Campbell County are trying to track down whoever shot a young dog in the head and then left him to die on the road. They asked to show the picture of the dog, but warn you, he is dead in it.

Campbell County Animal Control says the dog was a 7-8 month old Labrador / Pit bull mix and they found him on the side of Holcomb Path Road on Monday.

Although the dog appears alive in this photo, it is dead.

the pet crate and then shot to death

Animal Control Officer Benny David says he's doing everything possible to track down whoever did the crime. He said the dog was crammed inside a new blue crate when someone shot him.

David said the only place who sells the particular crate is Walmart, so he's trying to see if Walmart can help him find who bought it. He's also tracking the serial number on the dog's bark collar.

He also asks that if anyone recognizes the dog, to please contact them.

"There's many things you can do with a dog if you don't want it, you can put it up on Craiglist to find a new home, you can bring it to us and drop it off at the pound, as horrible as it is, you could have dumped it off and let it run off, but to sit it on the side of the road and be able to shoot this dog while it's sitting there looking at you?" David said.

Holcomb Path Road starts in Lynchburg off Route 460, but David said the dog was killed just over the Campbell County line.

David said the next step is to contact veterinarians in the area to try and track down the owner.

$7,000 REWARD TO FIND KILLER

PETA is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this crime.

The Danville Area Humane Society and the Virginia Alliance for Animal Shelters are each offering an additional reward of $1,000, which brings the total reward to $7,000.
