Second pit bull picked up after attack

MISSISSIPPI -- Animal-control officers Friday took into custody a second pit bull from the Quail Creek Circle neighborhood where three children were attacked on Thanksgiving Day, officials said.

The children are back at home, said Maj. Tony Sauro with the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department.

An 8- and 9-year-old were hospitalized Thursday for bites to their legs. A 10-year-old was treated by a plastic surgeon for bites to his face, Sauro said.

Sauro declined to identify the children.

The pit bulls’ owner is blind, Sauro said. Sauro wouldn’t identify him, either.

“The dogs got away from him and the kids were helping him round them up,” he said. “According to the neighbors, this happens all the time.”

On this day, though, the brindle-colored dog attacked the children, he said.

Animal-control officers took a red pit bull from the residence Friday when it was determined neither dog was current with their rabies shots, Sauro said.

The owner was cited for not having the dogs’ immunization records, he said. Additional charges are pending.

The dogs will be quarantined for at least 10 days at the Humane Society of South Mississippi, he said.
