Woman sentenced to 6 months after her dog attacks child

LOUISIANA -- A Loranger, LA woman has been sentenced to six months in the Tangipahoa Parish Jail after and 8-year-old girl was attacked by pit bulls in April 2012.

The child, Mikayja Oliver and her friend Desiree Mitchell were playing near their home when two dogs attacked. Desiree tried to pull the dogs off Mikayja.

"They bit her in the neck, in the back of the neck. Between the legs. On her legs. All up and down her arms. On her face," said Desiree. Mikayja had multiple injuries, but the worst was a torn artery in her leg.

Both of the dogs owners, Bridgette Harper and Natalie Newton were charged with negligent injury.

Harper was scheduled for a bench trial on August 12, 2013 but she chose to plead no contest to the charges. She was sentenced to six months, which is the maximum sentence for negligent injuring.

Newton's case is still ongoing.

Mikayja had to undergo various surgeries following the attack.
