Georgia: American Bulldog Adopted Off Craigslist Mauls Shih Tzu to Death

GEORGIA -- Melanie Avila says the neighbors who adopted the dog named Tux", that mauled her Shih Tzu were misled.

Avila told CBS Atlanta News that the dog's original owner, David Martin, didn't stress enough in the article posted on Craigslist in April that Tux, an American Bulldog had been aggressive toward smaller dogs.

The listing does mention that he is "not very good with small dogs," but other than that, Avila said there was no warning and now her 5-month-old Shih Tzu is dead.

"It all the sudden lunged for Morty's neck," said Avila. "It chomped on him and bit really hard; you could hear my dog crying."

Avila said she had just finished taking the dog for a walk and was right outside her door when Tux came running out.

"I tried to yank him a little bit, but he had such a tight grip the dog had to be removed. I was just screaming hysterical," Avila said. "Morty was still alive, looking at me crying, and then not even 10 seconds later he went limp."

According to the residents who adopted Tux, they were just trying him out for two weeks to see if he would be a good fit for their family.

According to one resident, they were never fully warned that the dog had serious problems with smaller animals. She told CBS Atlanta News the only warning they had was that the dog had gotten into a fight with a larger dog.

Martin, the original owner said that isn't true, and that it was a freak accident. Martin declined to be interviewed on-camera for the story or over the phone. But stressed he told the people adopting the dog that Tux was aggressive.

Martin claims the dog was given to another family who has a farm, and they were aware the dog killed Morty.

"My dog is gone, that could have been a child or anything," said Avila. "I don't think the dog is safe anywhere, in a home, or in the country. I would like to see the dog put down."

This is called NIMBY = "not in my back yard". It's when, instead of doing the right thing and putting vicious, killer dogs down, they're "rehomed", sent to "no kill rescues", sent to live with relatives in another town, banished by town officials who don't care where it goes as long as it's not in their jurisdiction any longer, etc. where the dog is free to kill again and the neighbors who now live near it have NO idea what it's done and how dangerous it is.
