Canada: Family says American Bulldogs that mauled little boy had previously mauled their dog to death - and that nothing was done it

CANADA -- A Wallaceburg family is feeling a number of different feelings after hearing that a little boy in their neighbourhood was attacked by two American Bulldogs, because they say the two dogs have attacked before.

AMERICAN BULLDOGS HAD KILLED BEFORE
Nick and Lisa Persyn say their dog Jordan, a Jack Russell / Labrador Retriever was also attacked by the same two American Bulldogs in October of last year, and later died from his injuries three weeks later.

They say they want changes in the way dog attacks are reported and addressed so that incidents don't happen over and over again.

The condition of a three-year-old Wallaceburg boy Tucker Marcolin, who was attacked by two dogs on Monday, is improving as he remains in a Michigan hospital.

Marcolin, 3, was attacked by a dog while sledding at Wallaceburg's Jaycee Park down the street from his house with his babysitter and six-year-old brother.

Police said two dogs escaped from their home and attacked the three-year-old child around 5 p.m.

PRIOR ATTACK RESULTING IN DEATH
The incident with the Persyns happened at Jaycee Park as well. They took their dog and their two-year-old daughter to the park on Oct. 20.

While at the park, two dogs, who they say were unattended, charged at Jordan.

“They got Jordan on one side of the neck and the other dog came around the other side of me and got him on the other side of his neck,” said Lisa Persyn. She tried to kick the dogs off of her dog, but they wouldn't stop them.

JORDAN WAS MAULED TO DEATH BY THE AMERICAN BULLDOGS

“They just had this growl and this determination that this is what they were going to do and they were going to tear him apart,” Lisa Persyn said.

Nick Persyn, a mountain of a man at almost six-foot-eight, covered up his dog to prevent it from being attacked.

“The dogs were jumping on me and over me and trying to get in wherever they can to bite him,” Nick Persyn said.

The Persyns said the attack went on for almost 15 minutes.

“They were just relentless. It was the most vicious thing,” Persyn said.

JORDAN SUFFERED THREE WEEKS BEFORE FINALLY DYING
They say up to the incident their dog was doing well for an older dog, but that  Jordan wasn't same after the attack. He had been hurt pretty badly and wasn't eating after the incident. He kept on getting sick. Jordan developed bleeding stomach ulcers and died three weeks after the attack.

The incident haunts the Persyns.

The Persyns said they wanted something done about the dogs. They warned neighbours and contacted Pet and Wildlife Rescue (PAWR). Lisa Persyn credited PAWR for following up on the incident, and said they were working on the file, but said more should've been done.

“Those dogs should've been euthanized,” Lisa Persyn said. “These dogs were out for blood, this was different, this wasn't just a little nip.... If he (Nick) wasn't there (Jordan) would've been done right there.”

The incident also left the Persyns with a $1,000 veterinary bill.

After hearing about the incident with Tucker Marcolin on Monday, they said their hearts broke after hearing from neighbours that the dogs attacked again, this time a little boy.

The Persyns said there was feelings of guilt that they didn't get the job done in pushing for action against the dogs. They said they felt flustered.

“Something needs to be done or changed, so that an attack at that level things have to happen more than a slap on the wrist,” Lisa Persyn said.

Three year-old Tucker Marcolin

They said the dogs have terrorized the neighbourhood in the past, the Persyns said, prior to the two attacks.

The Courier Press attempted to get a comment via social media from the woman who neighbours say owns the dogs, but she hasn't yet responded.

During Monday's incident a man and woman visiting family on Larkwood Street immediately ran to the park to help the young boy and babysitter, police said.

Tucker's six-year-old brother ran to safety and the injured boy was carried from the scene to a home as 911 was called, police said. The babysitter, who sustained non-life threatening injuries, was treated and released from hospital.

The injured boy was taken to the Sydenham Campus of the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance and was later transferred to a Michigan hospital for further medical treatment.

The dogs were identified and seized by Pet and Animal Wildlife Rescue and are currently in quarantine.

The community has rallied around the boy, as a GoFundMe set up on Tuesday, has raised over $18,000 in just under 24 hours. The goal for the campaign was $2,500 and that figure was surpassed in the first hour of the campaign.

In an update on the page, it said Tucker has had a few surgeries, and things are looking up.

“Tucker "The Tank" is a strong little boy who will get through this, he is currently in Detroit and will be there for over a week while he is monitored 24/7 healing,” they wrote in an update.

In an update on the GoFundMe page, it said it's expected that Tucker will make a full recovery. The GoFundMe page said Tucker had lots of stitches on his face and leg.

The money raised is aimed at helping the family with travel costs and the lost time from work for the parents.

Police continue to seek information from the public as the investigation into the incident continues.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Const. Ed Vannoord at edmondv@chatham-kent.ca or at 519-436-6600 ext. 8668. Anonymous calls can also be made to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Canada: "The pit bull broke his chain collar and in an instant had Charlie in his mouth crushing him with his jaws before I had a chance to get to him"

CANADA -- Melinda May Matthews posted on Facebook February 21, 2018 ·

Taylor my nine year old daughter and I watched in horror today when a loose pit bull fatally attacked our precious little 5 lb dog Charlie who was tied to a post for his morning ritual pee.

We stood there helplessly crying and begging for it to stop as it was happening in front of our eyes.

The pit bull broke his chain collar and in an instant had Charlie in his mouth crushing him with his jaws before I had a chance to get to him.

We will forever have nightmares of the squeals that came out of my precious little Charlie. The owner had to punch his Pit Bull in the head several times before it released Charlie, once released there wasn't any more squeals just twitching.

My Charlie died on the way to the animal hospital today. My family and I are devastated this preventable accident happened.

Owners of aggressive dogs towards other animals please wear a muzzle on your dog. Charlie would be sitting beside me right now because he was my shadow and the dog that attacked him would also be alive. Heartbroken 💔

Canada: Nine-year-old girl mauled at animal shelter during "meet and greet". Dad finds out later shelter knew dog was aggressive

CANADA -- When a Beaumont family took a trip to the Edmonton Humane Society on Sunday, they didn't expect it would end with a visit to the hospital.

Brett Powlesland said his nine-year-old daughter was injured at the animal shelter on the city's north side when she was attacked by a large dog in a room on the adoption floor. The Humane Society is investigating the incident.

Powlesland said his family was at the shelter on a visit because his niece wanted to pet kittens for her birthday.

He said the dog was friendly when he gave it a scratch before bringing his daughter into the room, but when it saw the child, its temperament changed.

"He looked up at her, saw her face, and then it was like lightning fast. The very next thing that happened was he had her left arm right in his mouth," Powlesland told CBC News.

He said he tore the dog off his daughter — possibly the wrong move, as she was cut where the canine's teeth had dug into her skin.

As the pair tried to escape the room, the dog managed to take hold of the girl's other arm.

"I this time put my hands in his mouth, and pried its jaw open and freed my daughter's arm," Powlesland said. "And we finally got her out of the room."

But she shouldn't have been allowed in the room in the first place, he said.

Dog had known "behavioral issues"
The girl received stitches at hospital.

The humane society shared the dog's records with medical staff. The file contained information on the dog's immunization history and also had details on behavioural issues, Powlesland said.

"My daughter probably should not have been let in that room. The record for the dog explained that he has issues with aggression, that he has [attacked] other dogs," he said.

Edmonton Humane Society spokesperson Jaime Caza confirmed the dog's records were given to the hospital, but did not confirm their contents.

She said dogs with behavioral problems aren't permitted on the shelter's adoption floor.

"They go through a screening. They go through our system with our vets as well as with our behaviour team," Caza said. "And in a situation like this, there would be restrictions placed on age limits that can go in there."

Caza said the dog is no longer adoptable.

"He is in a bite quarantine, which is required by Alberta Health Services for 10 days," she said, noting that the shelter's investigation of the incident should be concluded by then.

Staff, volunteers and witnesses will be interviewed as part of the investigation, Caza said.

"I'm still looking into exactly what happened to see if it aligns with what should have happened in this situation, and making sure that the right pieces are in place so something like this is avoided at all costs again," she said.

Based on the results of the investigation, improved training, communications or staff supports could be implemented at the shelter.

Shelter claims it's 'an isolated incident'
Powlesland questioned whether the training staff receive is adequate. He said they weren't unwilling to help his daughter, but didn't appear to know how to respond with first aid.

"It's a good thing my wife and I are medical professionals and are trained in first aid because we were the only ones there that were doing anything," he said.

"It didn't seem like they had any type of contingency plan in place for this."

He posted about the experience on Facebook.

Caza said she couldn't comment on how staff responded to the incident, as she's still gathering information for the investigation. Staff receive different levels of training based on their positions, she said.

To her knowledge, this is the first time something like this has happened at the Edmonton Humane Society, she said.

"In no way does that minimize it. We're so sad and upset about this event, but it is a very isolated incident. But that being said, this is an opportunity for us to learn," she said.

"We're working very closely with the family to make sure that the child is supported and providing what we can."

Powlesland said he's pleased with how the humane society has since handled the incident. He said they offered support to help his daughter reintegrate with pets, though she was still happy to see the family's dog Paco when she got home from the hospital.

"She's already given him a big hug," he said.

"She's not going to be afraid of all dogs, maybe just dogs she doesn't know."

As far as visiting other dogs at the shelter in the future — "that's definitely not going to be happening," he said.

Canada: After Kevin Newman's Pit Bull crushed a little Sheltie mix to death, he ran off with his dog - and is now blaming the Sheltie's owners for his death

CANADA -- A horrifying incident in Coal Harbour has left a Vancouver dog owner shattered.

Security camera footage from a balcony overlooking a stretch of the Seawall in Coal Harbour shows an unleashed Pit Bull locate its target, a Sheltie American Eskimo dog being walked on a leash. The Sheltie owners pause (first mistake) while the Pit Bull and the Sheltie sniff each other.

Suddenly the Pit Bull launches an attack on the Sheltie. Its owner, Farshid Tabari, swings his dog by its harness up into the air with the Pit Bull jumping up and grabbing the smaller dog. It yanks the poor dog right out of its harness and begins crushing it with several bites.

You see them finally separate the Pit Bull from the Sheltie and the owner casually walks off with his dog.

Update: He has been identified as KEVIN NEWMAN

“As soon as I put him down, he dropped down and did not move at all,” Farshid Tabari, the owner of the injured dog, said.

The injured dog was rushed to a vet but died from its injuries over the weekend.

The attack happened a week ago Sunday.

"PIT AN RUN"
Animal control officers are trying to locate the attacking dog and its owner, who left the scene.

The owner is believed to have been wearing a grey-and-white patterned jacket and had a neck tattoo behind his left ear.

Note: He has been identified online as KEVIN NEWMAN.

An online fundraiser to cover the cost of Tabari’s veterinary bills.

VIDEO NEWS CLIP #1:

This video irritates me. Yes, these people are victims but they don't have to have a victim mentality. YOU DO WHAT YOU NEED TO DO TO PROTECT YOURSELVES, YOUR FAMILY AND YOUR PETS. They have the mannerisms of victims. This damn dog comes by... why would you ever let your dog near it?

You tell yourself you'd stab the pit bull with a pocketknife or that you'd put it into a chokehold and strangle it to death. But this little Sheltie is, as they say "dead man walking", AFTER THE FIRST BITE. It only took one bite for the Pit Bull to crush the internal organs of this Sheltie. Once the Pit Bull jumped into the air and grabbed the Sheltie, the fight was over before it had even begun.

Despite what Pit Bull apologists claim, Pit Bulls have incredible bite strength. This Pit Bull leapt into the air and grabbed hold of the Sheltie. For a split second you can see the Sheltie in the air with the Pit Bull, also completely in the air, hanging onto the Sheltie.

That was enough to mortally wound the little Sheltie named Max. When they land onto the ground, the Sheltie doesn't move and the Pit Bull releases it.

They're busy grabbing and leashing the Pit Bull while the Sheltie never moves. He's a dying lump on the ground. The owner picks up her Sheltie and cradles him in her arms.

Then after their dog has been mortally wounded, they appear to attempt to talk with the Pit Bull owner who simply walks off with his dog. They put their dying Sheltie onto the ground and then stand there, looking confused.

I am NOT blaming the Sheltie's owners. They were naive - and Max paid the price for their naivety.

Follow your laws, but prepare yourself. Think like military and law enforcement -- have a winning mindset. You and your loved ones will make it home safely. Legally carry a taser, pocketknife, firearm. Plan for what you will do if something happens. DO NOT BE A VICTIM!

UPDATE:
Tabari told CTV News the owners of the other dog acted aggressively towards him before walking away.

"He didn't offer help or say, ‘How's your dog doing?’" Tabari said.

"CTV Vancouver reached out to the other person in the video, Kevin Newman, who says CLAIMS he hung around for 10 minutes after the attack, but the security video shows him and a woman leaving after just one minute.

“I would never wish any dog to be hurt,” Newman said over the phone. ”I'm a dog lover.”

“I tried to give my information. I told them to call the cops.”

Animal Control is now investigating the incident while the British Columbia SPCA says one way to prevent such attacks is to keep your pet on a leash.

BLAMING THE VICTIM
Newman, on the other hand, is at least partially blaming the leash for Max’s injuries.

“He had a little rope harness on the dog, that's probably what made the internal bleeding,” Newman said.

This was their GoFundMe page:

On January 21st, our poor little Max was attacked while walking on the Coal Harbour seawall with his mom and dad. Max was leashed, but the attacking Pitbull was not. Max was tossed through the air and pinned down before his owners could separate them.

Max was seen by a veterinarian immediately with bills exceeding $2000. Over the course of the next week, Max’s condition worsened and he was rushed back to the hospital with further bills reaching $5000.

On Saturday evening, after discovering internal bleeding, Max’s family had to make the difficult decision to euthanize him. We’re seeking funds to assist Max’s family pay for the cost associated with the veterinary care.

Canada: Girl, 6, undergoes surgery, requires 125 stitches to face, leg after dog attack

CANADA -- A six-year-old Windsor girl nearly lost an eye and required surgery, including 125 stitches, after being mauled by a dog during a weekend sleepover.

“It was horrific, I walked into a nightmare,” Pam Robertson, the girl’s grandmother, told the Star Thursday. “She was holding the right side of her face on with a towel. She had a towel wrapped around her leg. When I walked in, it really looked like Freddy Krueger had just swiped her face.”

The dog, which Robertson described as a pit bull, attacked Karma Jariett Saturday night after she was dropped off at a friend’s house in the 900 block of Randolph Avenue.

Bill Tetler, manager of bylaw enforcement for the City of Windsor, said his department is investigating but he wouldn’t give any details. The city and province both have legislation banning the ownership of pit bulls born after 2004.

“We are aware of what transpired this past weekend,” said Tetler. “We received the report from Windsor police and we have an open investigation at this time.”

The city wouldn’t say Thursday if the dog was seized or confirm if it is a pit bull.

A dog could be heard barking inside the Randolph Avenue house Thursday afternoon. A man who said he lived there refused to comment.

“Get the (expletive) off my property,” he said. “If I see you back here there will be consequences.”

Robertson said she dropped Karma off at the house around 7 p.m. At 7:50 p.m., her phone rang. There was a problem. Robertson, who lives just around the corner, raced over to the house.

Karma was on the couch with blood pouring from the torn flesh on her face.

“We were playing and then one of the other dogs came, like another dog that somebody was dropping off, and it was staying there for a little bit,” Karma, just home from the hospital, said Thursday.

“Then they were fighting and I was trying to stop the dogs.”

She said the dog that lives at the house turned on her.

“The dog came at me and just bit me,” said Karma. “He just jumped at me and bit my face.”

She said an adult in the house tried to “punch the dog away.”

“Then the dog bit my leg,” said Karma.

Somebody had called 911. Robertson wrapped her arms around Karma and told them to call again. She said a couple more people walked in and started screaming.

“I could see the corner of her eye was bit,” said Robertson. “There was a tooth that went right in the corner of her eye. Thank God she didn’t lose her eye or have nerve damage, that we know of so far.”

She said paramedics arrived and treated her in the ambulance before taking Karma to the Ouellette campus of Windsor Regional Hospital.

The hospital called in a plastic surgeon. They tried to do surgery but Karma started coughing so badly that doctors were worried she might vomit. Given the risk of choking, they stopped.

Karma was transferred around 3 a.m. to the Met campus. They cleaned and wrapped the wounds and kept her medicated. Robertson said they also gave her antibiotics and started with rabies treatment because the Pit Bull hasn’t had its shots.

“It’s so senseless and avoidable and tragic, it’s ridiculous,” she said.

Karma finally went into surgery Sunday afternoon. It lasted about two-and-a-half hours. The doctor emerged from surgery to tell the family Karma will be OK, but she has 75 stitches in her face. Robertson said there will likely be some scarring from the deepest wounds on her face. There are also 50 more stitches in her leg.

“What I didn’t realize was the teeth went in and pulled back on the top and the bottom on her calf,” said Robertson. “He ripped a whole flap, the whole top part of her calf, off. I could see her calf muscle.”

She said thinking about running into that house and seeing her wounded granddaughter still leaves her “weak in the knees.”

“I just hate to see her hurting, when she looked at her face for the first time and she cried and she was scared,” said Robertson. “She was already thinking ahead, like, ‘when I go back to school the kids are going to make fun of me.’

"She’s so beautiful — her personality, her soul, who she is, how animated she is. She’s constantly curious. She’s so far beyond her years, she’s so intelligent. From the first moment I saw her and put her in my arms, I knew I’d meet death before I let her face harm.”

(November 2017) Canada: Family horrified after pet cat allegedly drugged, abused on Snapchat; Josh Lemire charged with Animal Cruelty

CANADA -- Mounties are investigating a possible case of animal cruelty in the Cowichan Valley after a family's cat was allegedly forced to take illicit drugs and abused in videos shared on Snapchat.

Sharline Haglund says her daughter was sent disturbing Snapchat videos of the family's one-year-old cat Gigi by a former friend in the middle of the night Tuesday.

"[Gigi] got outside and because the people know my daughter, and probably the cat knows them, she would've went there with them or somehow ended up at their house," an emotional Haglund told CTV News Tuesday.

"It sounds like they gave her MDMA and then tried to shave her. From the post you can see that he has a razor that he's looking like he's going to shave her hair, and said he wanted to give her a mohawk or something."

A Facebook post created by a friend of Haglund's daughter's Tuesday accuses several people of taking part in the alleged acts of cruelty.

It also includes a screenshot of one of the alleged Snapchat messages, appearing to show a cat being shaved with a razor.

"Your cat loves molly," part of the caption reads, referring to the party drug also known as MDMA or ecstasy.

The Facebook post, which had been shared more than 700 times as of 5 p.m. Tuesday, also alleges the cat was thrown out of a window after it was fed drugs and shaved.

Haglund said her daughter notified her of the videos early Tuesday morning and they immediately contacted RCMP, which has launched an investigation.

Since going to investigators, Haglund said she's also heard the cat was given a "bleach bath" in the incident but is unsure what's true and what's not.

Gigi was missing for the majority of the day Tuesday, but was finally located around 7:30 p.m.

Haglund said everything the people in the video said they would do was done to the cat: she was shaved, the number 666 was written in her ear, and there appear to be bleach marks on her back.

She took the cat to the veterinarian Wednesday morning and said the family hoped to know more later in the day.

The BC SPCA says it is aware of the allegations and is assisting the RCMP investigation however it can. An RCMP update was expected Wednesday.

Animal protection officer Tina Heary says the organization is extremely concerned about the missing cat and the effect any illicit drugs could have on it.
"If it's been forcibly given some type of drugs and it's experiencing the effects of that, and it’s a cold rainy day – my understanding is it was also abandoned in an area away from its home – it's put into a very unfortunate and dangerous environment," said Heary.

Haglund said she has no idea why the former friends of her daughter would take part in the alleged acts, but that she considers it a form of cyberbullying.

No charges have been announced in the investigation. Mounties are appealing to anyone else who has information on what happened to contact them at 250-748-5522 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Update: Josh Lemire, 20, has been charged with Animal Cruelty. Others deemed to be minors under the age of 18 are also involved.

Future serial killers? Jeffrey Dahmer, the Night Stalker, the Boston Strangler and others have confessed to torturing and killing animals for fun before even that became mundane and they moved up to human beings.
