JAPAN -- A teenage girl was forced to eat 30 dead goldfish by her mother and the woman's partner as one of a series of sadistic assaults, police have revealed.
The couple killed the girl's pet fish by pouring detergent in their tank and then served them up, ordering the daughter to, "Eat them all," according to Kurume police officials.
The couple were both arrested and indicted last year for physically assaulting the teenager, including tying her to a bed with rope, punching her in the face and burning her tongue with cigarettes. They were rearrested Feb. 16 over the goldfish incident and charged with duress.
The goldfish incident happened in June 2015 at the apartment the three shared after the couple criticized the teenager over the feeding of the pets.
Unemployed mother Yuko Ogata and her self-employed partner Takashi Egami, both 46, are currently on trial on several charges, including confining the daughter resulting in injury.
Ogata has admitted the new charge, while Egami has denied having played a role in the abuse.

New pictures of the Oregon Zoo's 6-week-old river otter pup, Ziggy
OREGON -- It's Zigzag by a landslide.
When the Oregon Zoo last week asked the public to vote on one of three pre-selected names for its 6-week-old river otter pup, about 50 percent of more than 8,000 voters chose Zigzag – Ziggy for short – over Trask or Willamette.
The zoo prefers to name its river otters after Northwest waterways. The Zigzag River is a 12-mile tributary of the Sandy River. It flows down Mount Hood through Zigzag Canyon.
Plus, it's nearly as much fun to say as the little otter must be to watch, which from time to time is now possible, according to the zoo.
The pup, born Nov. 8, was tucked away in a maternity den with mother, Tilly – short for Tillamook – until recently. But now that he has opened his eyes and started to walk, he and his mom can sometimes be seen through a den window in the Cascade Stream and Pond exhibit.
"Young river otters are very dependent on their moms, and Tilly has been very nurturing," said Julie Christie, senior keeper for the zoo's North America area. "She did a great job with her first pup, Mo, earlier this year. She raised him up from this tiny, helpless creature into the sleek, agile, full-grown otter he is today. We're confident Tilly will be a great mom to her new pup as well."
Eventually, Tilly will teach Ziggy to swim; the skill doesn't come naturally to river otters.
A video of her teaching her first offspring to swim drew more than half a million views on the zoo's YouTube channel.

Woman kept 160 starving dogs
JAPAN -- A woman who kept 160 starving dogs in her house amid tons of their own excrement has been arrested, an official in Osaka said.
Ten tons of animal waste and other rubbish were removed from the house of Noriko Ishii, 43, after the dogs were taken away, the official said Wednesday.
A Bernese Mountain Dog rescued from the house was found to weigh just 7 kg (15-lbs) — a sixth of its normal weight, the official said, adding all the animals were "very scrawny".
Ishii, who is unemployed, could face up to ¥500,000 in fines if convicted of violating animal protection laws.
