Guyana: Elderly woman viciously attacked by her neighbor's Pit Bull; dog has to be beaten repeatedly with a piece of wood to stop attacking

GUYANA -- A lone bystander, had to come to the aid of a woman, as she was being attacked by a pit bull.

Desiree Griffith, 58, of lot 84 Doctor Charles Estate, Soesdyke was bitten on the back of her ankle, arms and back after a pit bull escaped from a wooden pen in which it was housed.

She was saved from further injuries when a passerby went to her rescue. The person also vented anger on the pit bull and other dogs that were on the road at the said time.

Kaieteur News understands that Ms. Griffith was heading out to the main road to have an afternoon chat with her friend at around 02:30 hrs Saturday when the dog, which had escaped from its pen, pounced on her.

According to reports, neighbor told Kaieteur News that they heard Ms. Griffith’s screams and then saw the animal attacking her as she laid helplessly on the ground.

“She was trying to escape but it clung to her right foot,” they recalled.

The animal only released the victim after it was beaten about the body by a passerby who was armed with a piece of wood.

The injured woman was rushed to a city hospital where she was treated and discharged. A Medical Certificate was also prepared by Doctors.

Desiree Griffith has been bedridden since the incident. She is currently at home but cannot move her arms neither her right foot.

The owner of the pit bull who lives a few houses away from Griffith is refusing to talk about the incident.

A report has been made at the Timehri Police Station but according to the victim’s daughter the owner of the pet has since been released from custody.

“No action has been taken”, said the woman’s daughter during a telephone interview.

Residents believe that the attack would have been fatal had the passerby not rushed immediately to Ms. Griffith’s aid.

Meanwhile, a concerned citizen lamented that he is concerned since the animal is still there and he is scared that attacks will be repeated.

Guyana: Little boy, 8, mauled by Pit Bull. Neighbor who rushed in to help also attacked.

GUYANA -- Whilst her relatives and peers were enjoying Phagwah and are preparing to celebrate Good Friday and Easter Monday, Johan Carter, is in severe pain after she was attacked and ravaged by a Pit Bull Tuesday afternoon.

The owner of the dog had carelessly left him loose and his gate open. He is said to be a Guysuco employee and taxi driver, who was not at home.

Johan Carter, 8, of Main Street, Cumberland, East Canje Berbice, and a grade three student of the Cumberland Primary School, had to be rescued by a neighbour, who in turn had to run for her life after the animal turned on her.

According to reports, around 16:00 hrs on Tuesday the child was returning home from the shop a few houses away when the dog raced out from the yard and attacked her.

She made a dash for it but was overpowered by the dog which pounced upon her, throwing her to the ground and started to bite her about her body.

Her unending cry for help attracted the attention of a neighbour who was nearby and who quickly raced to the scene. Her approach and shouts managed to distract the animal, but she had to run for her life after the dog turned on her. By that time other neighbours raced to the scene with various implements and warded off the animal.

The child was picked up bleeding from the wounds and rushed to the New Amsterdam hospital where she was admitted and given emergency treatment.
The police were informed and the owner was arrested and taken into custody at the Reliance Police station. He was subsequently released

TWO PIT BULL ATTACKS IN TWO WEEKS
Two Sundays ago another child in the district was mauled by a pit bull which attacked and bit her in her head.

Amanda Phillips, 11, called “Manda” of Sookhu Street, Number Two village, East Canje, Berbice, a grade six student of the Sheet Anchor Primary school was attacked and bitten by a dog owned by a Dr. Roy Nankumar of the same street.

The child received 10 sutures and is still hospitalised in the New Amsterdam hospital.

She was allowed to write the Grade Six Assessment Examinations from her hospital bed.

Guyana: Doctor charged with letting ferocious Pit Bull run at large

GUYANA -- The doctor whose dog on Sunday evening mauled a 10-year-old schoolgirl causing her to be hospitalised in a serious condition at the New Amsterdam hospital has been charged.

Dr Roy Nankumar, 58, a dentist of 336 Sookhu Street, Number Two Village, East Canje, Berbice appeared before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo at the Reliance Magistrate’s Court yesterday charged with causing a ferocious dog in rabid state to be at large.

The doctor is accused of being the owner of a ferocious unmuzzled dog, which he caused to be at large resulting in the dog biting Amanda Phillips of Sookhu Street thus causing injuries to the child.

In court he pleaded not guilty and was sent away on his own reconnaissance. The matter has been transferred to the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s court where it will be heard again on May 10.

According to reports the child, in company with her brother, was going to the shop to purchase some eggs for her mother when the dog scaled a fence and attacked her.

Residents had complained that the dog, a pit bull would usually jump the low fence and rush at persons passing.  They stated that they have constantly complained to the doctor to secure his animal and to raise his fence all to no avail.

An eyewitness had told the media that he was at home on his veranda about 19:45 hrs when he noticed the girl passing through the street with a bag and a torch light in her hands when she was attacked by the ferocious dog which threw her to the ground and held on to her head.

He stated that neighbors quickly rushed to the scene. However, their many shouts and efforts with sticks and other materials were not enough to ward or release the girl from the grasp of the dog.

Another resident was forced to chop the animal. The entire torment lasted for about 15 minutes.

The doctor is being represented by Attorney at law Rabindranauth Singh.

GUYANA -- A roaming pit bull has put a doctor of Sheet Anchor East Canje, Berbice in hot water after the animal mercilessly mauled a 10-year-old girl on Sunday evening as she was on her way to the shop to run an errand for her parents.

Amanda Phillips, called “Manda”, 10, of Sookhu Street, No.2 Village, East Canje Berbice, and a grade six student of the Sheet Anchor Primary school is in a stable but critical condition at the New Amsterdam hospital.

According to reports the child is scheduled to sit her Secondary School Entrance Examination (SSEE) in a matter of days. She was going to the shop to purchase some things for her mother when the dog scaled a fence and attacked her.

Residents complained that the dog which belongs to Dr Roy Nankumar of the same street, would usually jump the fence which is low and would rush at persons passing.  They stated that the pit bull was only brought at the residence about six months ago.  They stated that they have constantly complained to the doctor to secure his animal and to raise his fence all to no avail.

An eyewitness told the media that he was at home on his veranda about 19:45 hrs when he noticed the girl passing through the street. She had a bag and a torch light in her hands. When she was about to pass the Doctor’s yard, he took his eyes away for a brief moment only to hear the girl scream. When he looked back the dog was upon her.

She was thrown to the ground and bitten on her head and other parts of the body. Her brother threw a bicycle on the dog, but this did not deter it from continuing its attack.

Neighbors quickly rushed to the scene. However their use of sticks and other materials were not enough to free the girl from the jaws of the dog.

One resident stated that he kicked the animal which growled at him. He was forced to chop the animal which still held the girl in its jaws. 

Another resident using cutlass also chopped the animal across its back thus ending the girl’s horrifying ordeal. The entire torment lasted for about 15 minutes.

A resident stated that the girl was picked up, wrapped in a sheet and rushed to the New Amsterdam hospital where she was admitted and taken for emergency treatment.

During the operation doctors had to shave off some of the hair from the girl’s head which exposed some deep wounds.

During the time of the attack the doctor was not at home.

The matter was reported, and the police subsequently arrived on the scene. The doctor was arrested, but he was released soon after on station bail.

Speaking with the media the child’s parents, Teresa Persaud and Clinton Andrew Phillips, stated that they want justice for their child. They stated that the child would usually go to the back shop through the other street, but at the time the shop was closed. So she decided to use the one through Sookhu Street.

They are worried about what will become of their child and if she will be able to take her exams due within days.

The parents stated that according to the doctor. The flesh on her head was ripped away badly in more than one place. She will have to remain in hospital for some time to be monitored.
Investigations are continuing.

Guyana: Pit bull owner insists he is helping mauled pensioner

GUYANA -- The owner of the two pit bull dogs that badly mauled a Kitty, Georgetown pensioner two weeks ago, has refuted claims that he has refused to compensate the victim.

Yesterday, Alex Prashad told Kaieteur News that ever since the incident happened, he and his wife have been rendering assistance to the victim.

He explained that he acquired the pit bulls in order to protect his home. Prashad operates a barber shop and claims that his shop was broken into many times, causing him to suffer losses amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Prashad said that he reared one of the animals for almost two years and he recently received the second one from one of his friends, Charles.

Charles told this publication that the dogs, Susie and Bullets, are “very friendly” and “indoor dogs” who never attacked anyone in the area before.

But on February 20 last, he said that Prashad’s neighbour on his left rears chickens and the dogs got agitated so they “dug a hole under the neighbour’s mesh fence” and killed two chickens.

They then attacked a dog before they made their move on 63-year-old Mabarak Ali.

On that day, Ali was badly bitten and was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Ever since he has been discharged, he has been bedridden. His wife, Khairoon Ali, said that the man has no activity in his left hand. She also stated that Prashad had not rendered any assistance.

However, the owner of the dogs yesterday told Kaieteur News that he has been visiting Ali daily and has been taking “stuff” for him.

He also added that he spoke to the family about compensating them, but “they said that after Ali is fully recovered” they will handle the matter.

The owner claims that he is “more” than ready to assist the family and put an end to the matter.

GUYANA -- Family members of a 63-year-old Campbellville pensioner, who was mauled by two pit-bulls last February, are considering their options.

Mabarak Ali has been bed-ridden since the incident. He is currently at home but he cannot move his left hand.

The owner of the pit-bulls who lives a few houses away from Ali is refusing to talk about the incident.

A report has been made at the Kitty Police Station ever since the incident but according to the wife of the victim “no action has been taken”.

Reports are that Ali had left his home just after 05:00 hours on the 20 February, last, heading to the Kitty Masjid for his usual early morning prayers when the attack occurred.

Neighbours said that the vicious canines were earlier engaged in a bitter battle with some dogs in the area.

According to reports, Ali was just two yards from his home when the two pit bulls left their initial targets for the easier prey.

The dogs quickly brought him to the ground and as he desperately tried to ward them off, they tore into his hands and body.

His screams were heard by a female neighbour who herself raised an alarm.
When neighbours rushed at the scene, they said that Ali was groaning and he was praying and saying “Allah…… Allah”.

He was rushed to the Georgetown Hospital and was hospitalized for several days.

Ali’s wife, Khairoon Ali told Kaieteur News that after her husband got discharged, the doctor give her a “prescription” which indicates that he should visit the Out Patient Department at the hospital daily for “dressing”.

Mrs. Ali says that she is determined to get justice for her husband.

Meanwhile, one of the men who rescued Ali told Kaieteur News that he is concerned since the animals are still there and he is scared that that incident will be repeated.

When Kaieteur News tried to contact the pit bulls owner, Alex, his wife said that she will speak on his behalf but within a minute said that she is not capable of answering the questions.

Angry residents are now concerned about Ali’s wellbeing and are calling on the Police to conduct a thorough investigation.

Ali had left his home just after 05:00 hours, heading to the Ktty Masjid for his usual early morning prayers when the attack occurred.

The vicious canines were earlier engaged in a bitter battle with some other dogs in the area, having managed to escape from their owner’s yard, which is situated about six doors from Ali’s.

The owner of the dogs was arrested by the police after the matter was reported, but this newspaper understands that he is on station bail.

According to reports, Ali was just two yards from his home when the two pit bulls left their initial targets for the easier prey.

Ali saw them coming and tried to turn back to get to the safety of his yard, but it was too late.

The dogs quickly brought him to the ground and as he desperately tried to ward them off, they tore into the flesh of his hands and body. His screams were heard by a female neighbour who herself raised an alarm.

Kaieteur News was told that the neighbour grabbed a bucket of water, and assisted by two other persons, one with a piece of metal chain and the other with a piece of wood, they managed to chase the dogs away.

“If dat lady didn’t come out when de dog attack… She save he deh. She come out and holler,” a neighbour told this newspaper.

Ali’s wife, Khiroon, told this newspaper that the pit bulls had earlier killed two other dogs before attacking her husband.

“He was passing at the said time and he told me that he saw the dogs fighting, but he did not know that this would have happened. But you know, he go to turn back, but they attacked him,” Mrs. Ali explained.

She said that her husband told her that he tried several times to get up while the dogs were on him but he could not.

“I heard my husband screaming, bawling, and I rush out on the road and I saw the dogs, and I get in back the yard.”

The woman said that she later saw two boys chasing the dogs with a piece of wood and a chain.

She said that for a moment she thought that the dogs would attack her since they were chasing after a cat which was running towards her gate.

Eventually, several persons were aroused and her badly wounded husband was placed into a taxi and rushed to the Georgetown Hospital.

According to Mrs. Ali, while her husband sustained no broken bones, he lost a significant amount of blood. She said that the owner of the pit bulls has been cooperative, even promising to get rid of the vicious animals.

Four years ago, a pack of vicious dogs attacked and killed 53-year-old security guard Charles Roopchand on the Ogle Airstrip Road, East Coast Demerara. On that occasion the dogs had also attacked a female jogger, doing lesser damage.

After a lengthy trial, the owner of those dogs was acquitted of the charge laid against him.
