Louisiana: Session Bosley Jr., 37, arrested on drug and animal cruelty charges; injured Pit Bulls seized

LOUISIANA -- A man was arrested on animal cruelty and drug charges after deputies received a complaint of drug activity.

The Natchez Democrat reports 37-year-old Session Bosley Jr. was arrested Tuesday and charged with several offenses that include five counts of cruelty to animals and drug paraphernalia.

Concordia Parish Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy David Hedrick says when deputies arrived, they spotted Bosley selling drugs outside the residence at 704 Vidalia Drive, Ridgecrest, and then going inside.

Hederick says when authorities entered the residence they found several pit bulls, weapons and drugs such as cocaine and ecstasy.

Hedrick says one of the dogs had scissor wounds to its ear and another dog had an untreated broken leg. The dogs were taken to a veterinary hospital for treatment.

It's unclear if Bosley has a lawyer.

South Carolina: Will Harpe says a vet cropped his puppy's ears but he refuses to give the name of the vet. Police believe he duct-taped his puppy and did it himself so he's been charged with animal cruelty

SOUTH CAROLINA -- The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office said a man is in custody after an incident of animal cruelty was posted on Snapchat.

Deputies said on Apr. 3, William Wendell Harpe III was arrested after an investigation. Deputies were notified after a photo of a dog possibly being abused was posted on Snapchat.

Investigators said Harpe wrapped a puppy's mouth and leg in duct tape to "keep from being bitten" while removing staples from the dog's ears.

Harpe told investigators the puppy had his ears cropped by a veterinarian.

Deputies said after an investigation, they were unable to identify a veterinarian who performed the procedure and Harpe refused to provide the name of one.

Harpe is charged with ill treatment of animals and giving false information to law enforcement.

Harpe reached out to FOX Carolina on social media, sharing a photo of the dog he said was taken minutes after the tape photo. Harpe said the tape was wrapped so the first layer was not stuck to the dog.

He also said he has rescued many dogs and believes the charges will be dropped.

North Carolina: When Jerome Johnson, 21, wasn't busy breaking into people's homes, he was committing animal cruelty

NORTH CAROLINA -- Four people, who were teenagers when they committed their crimes, pleaded guilty in Pitt County Criminal Superior Court to breaking and entering into residences and were sentenced to spend time in the N.C. Department of Corrections.

“These four individuals broke into a number of homes between June and July 2016,” Pitt County Assistant District Attorney Jeffrey Cannon said. “During their acts of criminal behavior, windows were damaged as they made entry, and while inside the victims’ homes they walked away with whatever they could carry.”

A child also was traumatized, Cannon said.

Jerome Johnson, 21, of 3820 Vancroft St., Apt. 17, Winterville, pleaded guilty to eight counts of breaking and/or entering of a residence and one count of misdemeanor cruelty to an animal on March 29. Johnson was sentenced to 12 to 34 months in the N.C. Department of Corrections. Upon his release, he will be placed on supervised probation for five years.

The animal cruelty charge was because Johnson did not provide medical care for his pit bull dog after its ears were cropped and it caused unnecessary pain and suffering. 

Jaqwan Rawar Riley, 20, of 3935 Sterling Point Drive, TTT3, Winterville, pleaded guilty to eight counts of breaking and entering of a residence. Riley was sentenced on March 29 to 32-76 months in the N.C. Department of Corrections.

Michaela Justia-Rene Farmer, 18, of 705 Patton Circle, Apt. 18, Winterville, pleaded guilty to six counts of breaking and/or entering of a residence. Farmer was sentenced on March 9 to six to 17 months in the N.C. Department of Corrections. Upon her release, she will be placed on supervised probation for five years.

China Laday Smith, 18, of 2415 Bullock St., Apt. A., Winterville, pleaded guilty to eight counts of felony breaking and entering and was sentenced on March 9 to six to 17 months in the N.C. Department of Corrections. Upon Smith’s release, she will be placed on supervised probation for five years.

These four individuals also were ordered to pay the victims of the crimes more than $18,000 in restitution.

ARKANSAS -- A 19-year-old with a year-long history of dog-related crimes in the city has been arrested and charged with five counts of aggravated cruelty to an animal after allegedly housing six pit bulls for dog fighting.

Five had injuries and later were euthanized, officials said.

Jordan J. Ross, 19, of El Dorado, was arrested after being charged with aggravated robbery for a different incident on Feb. 17. El Dorado police and Union County Animal Control officers investigated and connected Ross to an incident report filed in late December 2016.

On Dec. 28, Animal Control Officer Charles Hartsell went to a house on the 1200 block of Detroit Avenue in response to a dog fighting report.

In a wooded area to the left of the residence, Hartsell said he expected to find some scarred dogs, but instead found six pit bulls, five male and one female, chained with fresh wounds; some had ears cut off.

“I saw the pictures of the dogs, they were all tore to pieces,” 35th District Court Jack Barker said during the first appearance court on Wednesday.

After identifying that the dogs belonged to Ross, Hartsell said he took the pit bulls with intent to rehabilitate them.

“We put them in the pound, put out a Facebook post, and started taking donations. We wanted to see if we could adopt some out, but it just wasn’t going to happen. We had to euthanize all but one,” he said.

Hartsell said he suspected that the dogs were stolen from other homes in the area.

In 2016, police had three reports connected to Ross allegedly stealing pit bulls for dog fights, some dated back to January. In August, police and animal control officers visited his house on the 700 block of Smith Street, they talked wih Ross’ relatives and asked to search the premises.

“We saw that he was caring for a puppy when he wasn’t supposed to,” Hartsell said.

Police tried arresting Ross for possession of an animal, but he ran from authorities and later was charged with fleeing.

Based on the seriousness of the crime, Ross’ prior arrest for fleeing, his charges for aggravated robbery, and the number of dogs involved, Barker agreed with State Prosecutor Greg Thomas’ suggested $25,000 cash or corporate surety bond for the five counts of aggravated cruelty to an animal.

He is being held on cash or corporate surety bonds totaling $50,000, half for aggravated robbery and half for the animal cruelty charges.

One of the found pit bulls is still alive and animal control officers are looking out for it.

Two other local men were arrested for similar criminal activity, Darrell L. Love, 33, and Charles Taylor, 30.

“Hopefully with three guys off the street, maybe people behind all this will slow down,” Hartsell said. “But we still have alot to do.”

Alabama: Marcel Spinks charged with aggravated animal cruelty after pizza delivery driver spots bloody dog

ALABAMA -- An Anniston man has been arrested for cutting the ears off his dog, and investigators say they believe he clipped them with garden shears or scissors and left them to bleed.

Calhoun County Deputy Jon Garlick said today that Marcel Raymond Spinks was arrested yesterday on charges of aggravated animal cruelty. He was later released on $10,000 bond. His court date is set for April 13 at 1:30 p.m.

 

Authorities said the case against Spinks began on Feb. 23, when a pizza delivery employee noticed a dog with excessive bleeding in the 400 block of Dearmanville Avenue South.

Capt. Marcus Wood said investigators believe Spinks cut the dog's ears to make the dog "look meaner" and to keep it from having something for other dogs to grab onto.

The dog, a four to five-month-old pit bull named Cry Baby, was operated on shortly after authorities seized him and is recovering.

"This is one of the worst cases of animal cruelty I've ever seen," said Jane Cunningham, board president of the Cheaha Regional Humane Society. "There was blood everywhere when the delivery person saw the animal. We were afraid the dog was going to bleed out."

In all, authorities seized seven dogs from Spinks. Eric Clanton, a veterinarian who treated the dog, said owners sometimes have pit bulls' ears trimmed - called fighting trim - but Spinks held the dog down and cut his ears. The left ear was completely cut off, Clanton said, while the right ear was cut from the center of the neck to the tip and were not sutured.

"These were open wounds," he said. There should be no effect on the dog's hearing.

Cunningham said she hopes people will report cases like this to prevent animal injuries.

Linda Hughes - I know quiet a few facts about this one and he has been arrested so his story of having a vet do that is not adding up. When people call in about abuse and neglect they do investigate it but unfortunately until the animal is in serious trouble they can't do anything about it which should tell you that they have some real proof here are he would not have been arrested. The dog with his ears cut was in serious need of a vets care and was not getting it at the very least. I have to disagree with you on this one and we will have to wait and see what happens in court. Just know this... it is really really hard to get someone arrested over a dog. I mean they really have to have some proof and they have it in this case.

United Kingdom: Breeder Leanne Fallow, 39, charged with animal cruelty after refusing to seek vet care for her dogs. Her punishment? Probation.

UNITED KINGDOM -- A woman who left puppies in an appalling state of neglect was caught out by her own Facebook page after a picture showed a Mastiff with mutilated ears.

Mother-of-five Leanne Fallow, 39, from Thorntree in Middlesborough, has been banned from having animals for five years after keeping a litter of Serbian Mastiffs in such a poor condition that their fur fell out.

The pups and their mother had suffered so badly that their skin had turned red raw, with the pain causing them to bite their own flesh.

John Ellwood, prosecuting on behalf of the RSPCA at Teesside Magistrates' Court, said: 'Two vets have certified that animals in this case have been suffering substantially.

'They were suffering from mange and had been self-traumatising themselves (by) scratching themselves and biting themselves and had thereby suffered secondary bacterial infection.'

Mr Ellwood explained that one puppy was in a 'very bad condition', adding: 'She had areas of skin that were open and sores and lots of crusty areas on her face.

'Her paws were swollen and inflamed - the inspector was very concerned about the way the animals were being kept.'

The court also heard the puppies' mum, Sheba, was 'underweight' and along with her litter had an untreated 'terrible skin condition' (similar to mange).

However, the prosecution claimed Fallow used Sheba to breed several puppies, a process Mr Ellwood said was 'highly suspicious'.

He said: 'The defendant claims not to know how her female became pregnant and who the father of her puppies was.'

Fallow had also claimed she gave away 'a number of' puppies to strangers by the time the investigation launched.

The RSPCA say she allowed the dog to breed to sell the dogs on, with the court hearing she had spoken on Facebook with a banned dog dealer to sell the pups.

Mr Ellwood said: 'The defendant's account appears to be that a large dog became pregnant and she does not know where or why and that she gave away some of the puppies to people she does not even know or remember.

'This appears to be a lie.

'She has on her Facebook a photograph of the mother of the puppies in her outhouse with a large male Serbian mastiff with mutilated ears.'

The court heard that mutilation was often carried out with Stanley knives on the breed to make them look 'fierce'.

This was first noticed by kindly Glynn Dack who helped raise the alarm after believing to have seen the 'mutilated' puppies mate with Sheba.

He took one puppy home last August after spotting their awful condition to try to nurse it back to health, despite having no intention of keeping it.

But Fallow, who her solicitor claimed was an 'animal lover', came around to take it back.

However, he was concerned enough to raise the alarm to the RSCPA, who also received reports from others, including a Middlesbrough Council officer, with police seizing the animals, who have since recovered.

In January, Fallow admitted four offences of causing unnecessary suffering, with Mr Elwood adding she caused 'prolonged neglect' for commercial gain.

Her attorney Daniel Burke claimed: 'She's desperate to keep that dog. It is part of the family since the death of her husband. She does love animals - she's not a callous woman.'

However, magistrates sentenced her to 12 weeks' custody, suspended for a year.

They also ordered her to pay £250 costs, £180 vet costs and a £115 charge while the RSPCA will now seize her family dog.

Mississippi: Brandy Giddens, wife of a Jackson Police Officer Rahn Giddens, selling puppies with ears hacked off

MISSISSIPPI -- A picture posted to social media of a puppy, whose ears were bleeding after reportedly being chopped off, has caused outrage from the community on social media.

A woman named Brandy Giddens posted on Facebook (under the name Brandy Tequila Giddens) advertising the sale of a small puppy. It appears the puppy's ears were cropped butchered at home and not by a licensed vet.

Jackson Police Department Commander Tyree Jones has confirmed that Giddens is married to an officer and the matter is under review by the Jackson Police Department.

When asked about the puppy, Giddens claims that she never actually saw the dog that she posted and she didn't know cropping sawing off their ears in that manner was illegal. She said she has been questioned by Jackson police and told them this information.

When asked who cropped the dog's ears and who the owner was, she would not give a name.

Although the Jackson Police Department would not release the officer's name, according to Facebook, he has been identified as Officer Rahn Giddens.

BRANDY GIDDENS HAS DONE THIS BEFORE
Heather Daw with local rescue, Rescue Tails, said she they were given a puppy bought from the same woman about 2-3 weeks ago. She says that particular puppy was also in a similar condition as the one pictured this week.

Although ear cropping is a common practice among specific dog breeds, the manner in which this particular puppy went through the procedure is what's causing an uproar among social media users.

Is this animal cruelty under state law? Our investigation revealed that it is.

"Under state law, it appears to be illegal. It does in my opinion it is," said Debra Boswell of the Mississippi Animal Rescue League. "It's cruel. They hold them down crop them with scissors hold the little puppy down and do it. There is always the issue of infection and bleeding. The first issue is pain."

Brandy Giddens claims she sold the puppies for someone else and has been questioned by police.

"I won't say who it is," said Giddens. "He asked me to and I did it. I didn't know it was illegal. If I had known it was illegal I wouldn't have done it."

Well, she better tell the police "who it it" or she'll be charged for hindering their investigation - on top of being charged with animal cruelty. And her POS husband needs to be charged as well. One look at this puppy and a reasonable person - especially a police officer - would know that this puppy was in pain and needed veterinary care. There's a saying, 'One bad apple spoils the whole bunch.' OFFICER RAHN GIDDENS is a rotten, putrid apple and he needs to be fired.

We later found out that the puppy was being sold on Facebook for $300. Giddens told us that she no longer has the puppy.

WHAT IS THE JACKSON POLICE DEPARTMENT GOING TO DO?

Jackson Mississippi Police Department spokespoerson Commander Tyree Jones said the matter was under review.

"The Jackson Police Department has received information regarding this issue," Jones said. "It is currently being reviewed at this time."

Don't expect them to do anything to Jackson Police Officer Rahn Giddens, but if animal lovers continue to press them about the issue, they just might charge Jackson Police Officer Rahn Giddens' wife Brandy Giddens with animal cruelty.

MISSISSIPPI -- The recent attempt by the wife of a Jackson police officer to sell a bloodied puppy online has sparked criticism and outrage on social media.

According to the head of one local animal shelter, the puppy appears to have undergone a cropping of its ears at home, a procedure at least one veterinarian said should be done at an animal hospital or veterinarian's clinic.

Brandy Giddens, wife of Jackson Police Department officer Rahn Gidden, posted photos (under the Facebook username Brandy Tequila Giddens) of a small, gray puppy with bloody ears in the Pearl, Brandon, Richland, Flowood II Yardsale pages on Facebook (those posts have since been taken down).

She also posted photos of a small, brown, "Tri Pit" puppy for sale on the page for $200. That puppy's ears also appear to have been cut.

Cropping dogs' ears is illegal in Jackson, according to Sec 18-4 of the city's Code of Ordinances, which states "no person shall crop a dog's ears or perform any other major or minor surgical procedures except a licensed veterinarian."

Brandy Giddens said Wednesday that the dogs did not belong to her and she posted them on social media as a favor for a friend of a friend.

Referencing the gray puppy, Giddens said, "I've never seen this dog a day in my life."

THIS ISN'T THE FIRST PUPPY SHE SOLD
Another puppy, named Layla, was purchased from Brandy Giddens and then given to Rescue Tails, an animal rescue shelter in Brookhaven, according to the shelter's president, Heather Daw.

"Her ears were cropped, but we are not sure of the manner in which it was done," Daw said. "However, the seller was clear that it was a 'home crop' and not performed by a veterinarian."

However, Giddens said Layla was not her puppy and she only served as a go between for the dog's owner and the person who bought her.

"I didn't get any money, I was just doing a favor for a friend," she said. "I'm never going to do that again."

Giddens said she was not aware that cropping dogs' ears was illegal in Jackson, saying, "If I had known that I would have never put the dog on there."

Daw described the home crop as "abuse" and said it isn't uncommon.

"In my opinion, ear cropping should only be done by a veterinarian under anesthesia; doing this at home is abuse and it causes the animal tremendous amounts of pain," she said. "Unfortunately, this type of abuse is not uncommon and animal rescues deal with this kind of cruelty, and worse kinds of cruelty, on a regular basis. We in rescue rely on the community for the funding and support that allows us to save animals from situations like this."

Dr. Christine Bryan, a veterinarian with the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine, saw pictures of the gray puppy. Bryan said she could not "definitively" say the puppy's ears were cropped at home but noted the lack of stitches and the appearance of the cropping.

"Typically there’s going to be sutures in place, closing the edges of the cropping," she said. "If it’s done by a veterinarian, it’s usually going to look different than that."

Bryan said cropping a puppy's ears should always be performed by a licensed veterinarian.

"It's a cosmetic procedure but it is a medical procedure, therefore it should be performed by a licensed veterinarian," Bryan said.  "It's not normal to be done at home and not something we would ever recommend."

Bryan said after cropping, the dog would be in a great deal of pain and need pain medication as well as a post-op check-up.

"It's something that needs to be checked by the vet who has done the procedure, and it requires continual care after the procedure," she said.

 

JPD spokesperson Commander Tyree Jones said Wednesday morning the matter was under review.

"The Jackson Police Department has received information regarding this issue," Jones said. "It is currently being reviewed at this time."

United Kingdom: Christopher Griffiths, 35, given just a 6 month jail sentence for chopping off his dog's ears

UNITED KINGDOM -- A man who force fed his dog with cocaine then cut off its ears using pliers and scissors has been caged.

Christopher Griffiths, 35, has been jailed for 24 weeks for the attack on his Staffordshire pit bull terrier named Victor.

Six months??? That's it???

Police found the distressed pet after Griffiths claimed he had been attacked in his home in Wrexham last September.

Judge Gwyn Jones said at the town’s magistrates court: “You ignored the obvious pain Victor was in. It was planned because you drugged the dog in advance.”

“Removing the ears would have taken a considerable amount of force.”

RSPCA inspector Kia Thomas said "When I first saw Victor I was just so shocked as his ears were gaping open wounds. I had never seen anything quite like it before.

"It was just so heart-breaking. It is awful to imagine what poor Victor went through. It was totally unnecessary.”

Following the attack Griffiths was told to hand in his two off staffs, Ned and Brandy, to the RSPCA.

Evidence of cocaine in the pup's system was picked up in a urine test.

Officers reported the dog to be remarkably placid given the extent of his injuries.

Griffiths was also banned from owning dogs for ten years.

PHOTOS ADDED * Florida: Brandi Seipe, 19, tied puppy's legs together, drugged it with Xanax and butchered its ears in homemade cropping say police

FLORIDA -- With fishing line and a Xanax-like drug, a suburban West Palm Beach, Florida, teen cropped a 10-week-old pit bull’s ears.

Brandi Nicole Seipe, 19, assured King’s owner she was experienced. Palm Beach County officials say otherwise, and now she’s facing an animal cruelty charge.

A county Animal Care and Control investigation showed Seipe was neither experienced nor legally licensed to perform such an operation. The 19-year-old was arrested for practicing veterinary medicine without a license as well as for animal cruelty, according to court records. She is due to appear before a judge on the charges Wednesday morning.

The puppy’s owner told Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control officials she bought King from someone in Broward County. She was looking for someone to crop the puppy’s ears, a practice that helps the dog’s ears stand upright.

That’s how she crossed paths with Seipe. The teen, who operated out of a suburban Lake Worth home, would crop dogs’ ears cheaply, the owner was told.

On a July afternoon, Seipe took the puppy, but wouldn’t let King’s owner inside to see the ear cropping, the owner told animal control. She had paid Seipe $80.

The owner was concerned when she came to pick up King. His ears were too short, she said, and he was more sedated than before the procedure.

Seipe told the owner she gave the puppy a sedative similar to Xanax, something she said she had done many times as a veterinary technician. 

Normally, Seipe had her boyfriend hold the puppies down while she cut their ears, but she tied King’s legs together because her boyfriend wasn’t available, she told the puppy’s owner.

Seipe told the owner she had no reason to worry.

But she worried anyway, so much so that she took King to a veterinary office. That office reported the incident to Animal Care and Control.

An animal control official said the puppy’s ears were cut extremely short. The edges were raw and open, and a fishing line was used to stitch up King’s ears, according to the report. The 10-week-old puppy cried whenever someone came close to its ears, according to an animal control report.

When animal control asked Seipe about the incident, she denied cropping King’s ears. She told them she used to be a veterinary technician.

“Ear cropping is a painful unnecessary procedure that is slowly being eliminated as an acceptable practice,” wrote the veterinarian who saw King shortly after the illegal cropping. “If done, it needs to be done by a highly skilled veterinary professional in an aseptic hospital environment.”

Georgia: Waynesboro man Theodore Jones, 36, facing multiple animal cruelty charges for puppy's with ears cut off

GEORGIA -- A Waynesboro man has been arrested accused of multiple animal cruelty charges.

According to the Waynesboro Police Department, Theodore Jones, 36, has been arrested on three counts of cruelty to animals after investigators state they found abused puppies on his property.

On June 29, investigators responded to Jones' home on Savannah Avenue and found a dead female puppy with brown and white markings.

According to the incident report, another puppy of the same description was found chained with food but had no water. Investigators found her right rear paw was cut multiple times and was swelling.

The report said a Chihuahua was also found on the front porch with no tag or chain. Investigators took the three animals into their care.

According to the incident report, investigators returned on August 3, after a witness told investigators she found a small puppy on the porch with ears chopped off and wounds that attracted flies and gnats. 

The witness said she knocked on the door and Jones answered, and took the puppy into the house.

The report states when investigators were previously at the home, the same puppy did not have its ears cut.

A veterinarian with the Waynesboro Animal Hospital advised that the puppy's ears did not appear to be cut by a vet and appeared to be infected.

Jones was arrested on August 8, and booked into Burke County Jail.

New York: Lee Hughes, who pleaded guilty to animal cruelty but failed to show up for sentencing,is now in custody

NEW YORK -- The man who pleaded guilty to animal cruelty but failed to show up for sentencing will remain in custody until his next sentencing date, according to the Nassau SPCA.

 

As News 12 Long Island has reported, Lee Hughes and two other people pleaded guilty in March in connection with the mutilation of a dog named Miss Harper.

Hughes and his estranged wife admitted to cutting off the dog's ear and part of her leg. The Nassau SPCA says the pit bull was just a few months old when the abuse happened in 2013, and her wounds became infected. News 12 was there when the dog was adopted by a Bellmore family following her recovery.

A warrant was issued for Hughes' arrest after he missed sentencing on July 11.

Hughes faced up to six months behind bars at his original sentencing.
