Appeal of 4 men sentenced to 3 years in jail over killing dog accepted

EGYPT -- An appeal of four men sentenced to three years in prison over torturing and killing a dog was accepted Thursday and the first trial session was set for March 16, Youm7 reported.

The dog’s owner, Sayed, was sentenced in absentia and faces also charges of armed robbery using his dog to terrorize people.

The Shubra el-Kheima Misdemeanor Court ruled Wednesday to sentence four defendants, including the dog’s owner, to three years in jail with labor over torturing and killing the dog, Max, last month.

A video showing the killing of the dog went viral on social media and animal rights advocators demanded the perpetrators be brought to court.

Footage released showed the men after they had leashed the dog to a pole stabbing it to death while a crowd looked on, with many recording the incident in Al-Ahram St. in Shubra el-Kheima of Al-Qalyubiyah governorate.

Investigations into the case showed that Sayed and a friend of him took Max with them with the intent to rob a shop, and that when another man defended the shop owner; Max bit the man in his genitals.

Sayed initially stated that he had been the victim of a fight, and has unleashed his dog to protect himself from a mob. Investigations later showed that he agreed to give the dog to be killed by those who were bitten.

'Max was defending me' owner of tortured dog tells TV show

EGYPT -- The owner of a dog brutally tortured and killed in a video that went viral on a number of social networks told a Cairo TV station the dog had previously bitten his abusers, but that the animal was defending his owner.

“Max was a kind and obedient dog,” Mohamed el-Sayed told the Dream TV Channel Wednesday. He said he bought the dog a year ago, and although it was not licensed “it was a well trained, lovely dog who never harmed anyone.”

Footage was released Wednesday of men after they had leashed the dog to a pole stabbing it to death on Sunday, while a crowd looked on, with many recording the incident. Those who killed the animal had been bitten in an incident more than four months ago, Sayed told Youm7.

In Sayed’s neighborhood in Al-Ahram St. in Shubra el-Kheema, he was involved in a fight, and a crowd of men had gathered with the intent to assault him, he said.

“I released the dog just to scare them away from me, and then called [the dog] back,” he added. He said that the men returned back and caught him, at that point, the dog “could not bear anyone harm me and bit eight of them.

Sayed left his home after the accident after a police report was filed against him. “I was afraid the police might come and arrest me.”

He returned back Jan. 7 and filed a police report against the men from his neighborhood after they assaulted his sister in revenge. Then, a reconciliation meeting between him and the other men was set with one condition: that the dog be killed.

“I tried to convince them to rethink their decision and not harm the dog, but they refused to relent,” Sayed said as he failed to hold his tears in phone call with the TV channel. Sayed added “I could not give them the dog myself; my friend did.”

The video has outraged social media users against the brutal slaying, with a trending hashtag launched in solidarity with the dog #Dog_Of_Alahram_Street.

Some shared versus of Quran that orders animal welfare, others called on the government to bring the killers to justice.

The Egyptian Society for Mercy to Animals (ESMA) condemned the incident and filed a police report against the killers of the Ahram Street dog.

Mona Khalil, a founder member of ESMA told The Cairo Post that there will be a protest on Saturday near Cairo Opera House against the killing.

Similar outrageous evolved in social media last year after pictures of a dog found seriously injured and dozens of dead stray cats found in the street in two separate incidents.

Two men from the video were reported arrested Thursday.

Three Arrested For Brutal Killing Of Dog In Egypt

EGYPT -- A Shubra prosecutor ordered on Thursday the detention of three men accused of killing a domesticated animal for four days pending investigations.

A video went viral late Tuesday showing three men beating a strapped dog with knives and killing him. The video is believed to have been shot at Giza’s Haram neighbourhood.

The three detainees were accused of killing the dog and possessing bladed weapons.

The detainees admitted to the prosecution they had killed the dog, accusing the dog’s owner of using it to commit crimes of theft.

They said the dog’s owner attempted to steal a shop belonging to one of them, adding that the dog bit another defendant who attempted to stop the theft.

The defendants said they agreed with the dog owner to kill the dog and in turn renounce a complaint filed against the owner accusing him of theft.

Egypt’s Penal Code stipulates that the punishment for killing a domesticated animal or “gravely harming it” is imprisonment for up to a year or a fine of no more than 200 Egyptian pounds.

Dog tortured to death in Egypt; it was revenge act on the dog owner

EGYPT -- A video posted recently on a social networking site shows a group of young people rallied around a dog attacking it with sharp weapons.

According to eyewitnesses, the brutal attack took place due to a quarrel between the owner of the dog and two other individuals.

Al Ahram and youm7 and Masrawy reported that the dog was loyal to its owner and rushed to protect him when he was being attacked.

The dog bit two of the attackers and a third person who was not involved in the brawl.

The victims sued the owner in court and who was sentenced to one year in imprisonment.

An eye witness said, "The dog's owner attempted to reconcile with the disputers but the parties demanded that he should hand them over the dog to be slaughtered. The owner rejected and offered to buy sheep for ransom instead of slaughtering the dog.

Unfortunately they refused and he asked them to shot the dog instead of killing it by knives and swords.

"They accepted his offer but instead tortured it and used weapons which was filmed and circulated by users of social networking site."

The owner of the dog who is identified as Mohammed Al Sayed was crying on the phone when he was interviewed by the Egyptian anchor Wael Ibrashy in the program 10 pm (Al Ashera Masan) which was braodcasted on Dream TV.

The killing of the dog in this horrible manner raised a wave of indignation among the Egyptian public and animal welfare societies.
