California: David Senk, 57, charged with animal cruelty after biting pet python and nearly killing it

CALIFORNIA -- A snake bite left the victim seriously hurt, but the injured party isn't whom you'd expect.

Police say a python underwent emergency surgery after a man allegedly bit the creature twice.

Officers were called to Del Paso Heights around 6:30 p.m. Thursday after a passer-by reported that a man was lying on the ground and may have been assaulted, according to Sgt. Andrew Pettit.

When they arrived, they found David Senk, 57, still lying there -- but police say he wasn't the one who was assaulted.

Another man approached officers and accused Senk of taking two bites out of his 3-foot pet python, Pettit said.

After checking out the snake, animal control officers performed emergency surgery to sew up a two-inch hole in its belly that reached all the way to its internal organs. The female snake, which was near death, was also missing a few ribs.

"You could see the poor snake's liver, all the way down the side," Sacramento Animal Care Services', Gina Knepp said.

Senk was arrested on suspicion of unlawfully maiming or mutilating a reptile and booked on $10,000 bail.

From jail, he told Fox40 that he can’t remember biting the snake and said he has a drinking problem.

“I did what?” Senk said after being questioned by Fox40. “If you find the owner, tell him I’m real sorry. I’m glad the snake will be all right. I’m willing to help pay for medical expenses.

The python’s owner could not be reached, and Senk told Fox40 he doesn’t know how he found the reptile.

He also admitted that he doesn’t really like snakes.
