NYPD Blue screenwriter punches his pet poodle to death

NEW YORK -- A screenwriter, who has previously worked with Steven Spielberg, allegedly killed his poodle by punching it in the face.

Ted Shuttleworth, 51, was arrested on Saturday morning at his Queens, New York, home.

The TV writer hit his pet poodle, Lola, so hard that she died from a brain injury, according to police.

With the dog's owner weighing in at 230 pounds and the tiny pooch weighing only 4 pounds, the pup did not stand a chance in the fight, reported the New York Post.

It is not clear how the 5-year-old dog had enraged Shuttleworth when he allegedly lashed out at her on May 29.

When Shuttleworth, who has also written for TV show 'NYPD Blue', took his poodle to a vet, they became suspicious as to how the animal had died.

Staff at the veterinary called the ASPCA, who then took Lola for a necropsy.

'Lola sustained a traumatic brain injury secondary to the application of blunt force to the right side of her head at the hands of the suspect, her owner,' ASPCA spokesman Joseph Pentangelo told the Post.

Shuttleworth, who charges $300 to read over scripts and also works at New York University as an administrative assistant, faces up to a year in prison if convicted.

His wife, Isadora, described the incident as a ‘horrible accident’.
