Duppstadt said his wife grabbed the couple's 5-year-old terrier, Zoe, and ran inside when the pit bulls broke through a gate on the front porch.
RIP Zoe |
She ran back outside when one of the dogs chased her, he added. But it was outside that the pit bulls managed to get a hold of Zoe and attack her.
"I tried to beat the dogs away with a club, but it didn't do a thing," Duppstadt said Thursday afternoon.
By the time they got the dogs off of Zoe, she was severely injured, he said.
A neighbor across the street helped pull the dogs away and put them in his fenced-in yard until police arrived, Duppstadt said.
When the Duppstadts took Zoe to the veterinarian, they decided to put her down.
"She had a hole in her stomach, in her chest, and one of her legs was chewed to the bone," Duppstadt said. "In all my years, I've never seen anything like that."
Duppstadt said he was thankful no one got hurt, other than a few bumps and bruises from his wife holding Zoe away from the dogs.
Melissa Smith with the York County SPCA said the two female pit bulls were being quarantined at the center and would remain there until West York Police settle the case against the owner, who Smith said is facing charges for having "dangerous dogs."
According to West York Police, Tina R. Price of the 700 block of West Poplar Street came to the scene to find her dogs, but left when she heard police were on their way.
Price faces citations for history of attacking without provocation and harboring dangerous dogs.
Price could not be reached for comment Thursday.
"Nothing changes what happened," Duppstadt said. "We'll miss our dog. I don't think we'll get another one right now."
