IOWA -- A Des Moines man brandished a machete at an animal control officer attempting to catch his dog after a bite complaint, police said.

The officer spotted the dog in the backyard and was about to catch the animal when Brian Michael Case, 35, allegedly ran down the back steps holding a machete over his shoulder.

The animal control officer ran back to his truck and called for police assistance, police reports show.

Case reportedly retreated into the house and a few other people with keys to the home allowed officers inside to retrieve the dog and take Case into custody, police said.

Case was charged with going armed with intent and two pet license violations. He was taken to the Polk County Jail and has been released.

Officers took the dog to the animal shelter.
