Woman sentenced for hanging boyfriend's dog

IOWA -- A woman who police said hanged her boyfriend's dog during an argument was sentenced Friday.

Sheena Cornwell received a sentence of two years in prison from Judge Joe Smith, which he then suspended.  She will be on probation for two years.

She was charged with animal torture after killing the 10-year-old pit bull mix dog on April 6.

Cornwell’s now-ex-boyfriend Joshua VanDyke said before he realized what was happening, he heard his dog Lilly banging against the garage door. He said Cornwell watched the dog die and then calmly told him that Lilly was taken care of.

Police said at this point, VanDyke went outside, found Lilly hanging in the garage from the rafters by her collar with the leash strung up on the rafters.

Cornwell's attorney said she has serious mental health issues, but is not a dangerous person.

Smith said he can't imagine that someone in their right mind would do that.  He said as tragic as the event was, locking Cornwell up will not do anything to help.
