Candace Lea Driggers accused of tying family dog in pillowcase and drowning it

FLORIDA -- A 32-year-old Middleburg woman accused of stuffing her dog in a pillowcase and tossing it into a retention pond where it drowned was arrested Thursday, authorities said.

Candace Lea Driggers, 32, of Stonegate Lane remains in custody at the Clay County Jail on a felony charge of aggravated animal cruelty, according to the Clay County Sheriff's Office.

Her husband reported that he had last seen the dog -- a healthy Chihuahua-terrier mix -- alive Sept. 28, according to court papers.

Driggers, her husband alleged, put the dog inside a pillowcase and tied it shut before throwing it into a retention pond to drown behind their home, where he later found it.

Driggers is being held on $50,000 bond, according to an arrest warrant.
