FLORIDA -- A Pinellas man is paying out of pocket to save the life of an abandoned dog found outside of the business where he works.
"My wife, she's the biggest animal lover. In fact she told me she doesn't care if I never buy her a birthday present again as long as I spend whatever I have to to get this dog back in shape," said Adam Clark.
On February 8, Pinellas Police responded to an animal complaint at 3975 118th Avenue in Pinellas Park. There, they found a dog that had been abandoned sometimes between Sunday and Monday morning and was in poor shape.
His skin was irritated down the spine all along the abdomen and around the nose, one eye was closed and crusted with discharge, there were chain or collar marks around the dog's neck, the toenails were overgrown, there were hard nodules on the hindquarters, elbows and belly and the dog was extremely malnourished and bones were visible.
The dog was filthy and shivering from the cold.
"He was pretty much just chained up somewhere and left to die," Clark said.
Pinellas County Animal Services responded to take custody of the dog, but they told Clark he would likely be euthanized.
Clark took the dog to his vet to see if anything could be done before it was decided to euthanize the dog.
He took the dog to Midway Animal Hospital where the vet said the dog had been living on concrete for a long time, causing the hardened nodules and skin issues. The dog had spent long periods of time on a chain and was in a state of starvation.
Midway Animal Hospital then agreed to work with Adam to treat the dog.
Adam has already paid several hundreds of dollars out of his own pocket to help cover the cost of the treatments. He has also started a GoFundMe page where he is asking for help in paying for the treatment of the dog, which has now been named Andray.
"I was given the name Andray today by my friends at Midway Animal Hospital who are trying to save me. They dont know my real name or where I came from. I was abandoned in front of this nice mans shop and left to die. He called the police after seeing the condition I was in . My ribs and bones are sticking out, my toe nails are almost 2 inches long and you can see where my collar has worn into my skin. I dont know why I was treated this way, Im a good boy and I have a big heart. The police are looking for the person who did this to me. When animal control showed up, the nice man would not let them take me, even though they just wanted to let me get some much needed sleep. Instead, he brought me to his vetinarian so I could have a chance to know what its like to be loved. I am very undernourished and my skin is severally damaged . They say my continued care to get me back in good health will cost upwards of $1500. By donating to my cause is litterally saving my life." -- from the GoFundMe page
The investigation into the animal cruelty case is open at this time with no leads. Pinellas Police are seeking the public's assistance in providing information on who was responsible for the neglect of the dog.
