North Carolina: Dog owner speaks out after horrific crimes allegedly committed by Lorraine Villanueva

NORTH CAROLINA -- As a dog continues to recover from a brutal stabbing, we are hearing from the owner of the other dog that did not survive.

New Hanover County Sheriff’s deputies say a woman is facing felony charges after a domestic dispute ended in the stabbing of two dogs last week.

“She was just as much a family member to them as she was to me,” Alex Smith said.

To Smith, his dog was more than a pet. Jane was family.

“I raised her since she was a few weeks old,” Smith said. “She was a sweet dog.”

Smith is now making unexpected arrangements to cremate the pit bull after a brutal attack. This was the 911 call that led deputies to Smith’s house February 9.

“She’s in here trying to choke his dog out trying to kill him,” the caller said. “She’s laying in the living room with a mattress with the dog wrapped up in a blanket.”

Deputies said they found Smith’s roommate Lorraine Villanueva inside trying to suffocate their other roommate’s dog Daisy. Smith said Jane was nowhere to be found.

“I was really concerned for Jane,” Smith said.

Smith said one of his family members found Jane later that day about 200 feet behind the house.

“She was wrapped in a blanket and duct taped,” Smith said.

Deputies said Villanueva stabbed the dog more than 100 times, wrapped her up in a blanket and tossed her into the creek.

“I know she didn’t do anything to deserve you know what happened to her and it’s really sad,” Smith said.

While Daisy continues fighting to recover, Smith said he is going to fight for justice for Jane.

“No animal deserves to be hurt, let alone brutally slain the way Jane was,” Smith said.

Jail records show Villanueva is facing two felony cruelty to animal charges. She is in jail under a $100,000 bond.
