Illinois: Two year-old bitten in face by pit bull while visiting relatives

ILLINOIS -- A 2-year-old girl was bitten on the face by a pit bull terrier June 4 while she was visiting family.

According to the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office, the child was taken to Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago and has since been released.

The incident occurred in the 0-100 block of Fernwood Rd. in Montgomery. The mother’s child reported the bite to police.

Kendall County Animal Control has been notified of the incident. According to Animal Control, if the animal is up to date on its rabies shots, it receives a bite exam and then another one 10 days later to make sure it's not exhibiting any signs of rabies. The animal then stays on home confinement for 10 days. After that, it goes back to the vet to have a second exam.

If the animal is not up to date on shots, it needs to be under the supervision of a vet for a 10-day quarantine period. At the end of the quarantine, the animal is given a rabies shot and then released.
