Florida: Sarasota jail inmate Judy Lamb, 56, charged with horrific animal cruelty, may have hanged herself

FLORIDA -- The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office and District 12 Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating the death of an inmate that occurred at the Sarasota County jail, according to a Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office press release.

Judy Lamb, 56, of Nokomis, was found unresponsive by corrections personnel in jail her cell with a bed sheet around her neck at around 6:08 p.m. Tuesday, according to Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Kaitlyn Johnston.

Neither corrections personnel nor inmates noticed unusual behavior by Lamb leading up to her death, said Johnston.

Lamb was arrested four days after Nokomis residents Mona Gehman, 51, and Eddie Roden, 70, were arrested on June 30, according to arrest reports. All were charged with animal cruelty.

Deputies responded to the 100 block of North River Road in Nokomis after witnesses reported on June 27 that Lamb and Roden mishandled Georgie, a 7-pound Pomeranian. Lamb and Roden were carrying Georgie by its neck and tail.

When deputies entered the home, they found the dog dead, according to a press release about the charges.

Lamb admitted to unsuccessfully strangling Georgie, and Roden admitted to tying a shoestring around the dog’s neck. Gehman said she would “finish the job,” according to the release. A necropsy of Georgie ruled the death was a result of trauma to its head and abdomen.

Gehman had no prior arrests in Sarasota County and bonded out at $1,500 on the day of her arrest, according to her record.

According to arrest reports, Roden has three prior arrests, one of them from 2012 related to domestic battery by strangulation. His bond was set at $200,000.

Lamb also had three prior arrests with domestic violence and substance abuse charges. She was being held at the jail on a $75,000 bond and was supposed to be released Wednesday, according to her arrest report.
