Oklahoma: Roy Wright, 70, jailed after 19 animals found in poor health, 1 dead at his home

OKLAHOMA -- A Turley man was arrested Monday on multiple counts of animal cruelty after Tulsa County deputies found 20 animals — one of which was already dead — reportedly in need of medical care on his property.

Roy Wright, 70, was booked into the Tulsa Jail about 5 p.m. on 20 complaints of animal cruelty.

Tulsa County deputies arrested Wright about 9:30 a.m. at his home in the 1300 block of East 63rd Street North. They rescued 18 dogs and one cat from the property, according to the department. One of the man’s dogs was found dead.

The deputies had been called to an adjacent home about dogs at large. Once they arrived at the home, the caller told deputies the dogs, including one who was dead, lived at a house northeast of his home, according to an arrest and booking report.

The animals’ living conditions were described in the arrest report as “filthy.”

The report alleges that the dogs didn’t have access to clean water and were kept on 3- to 4-foot long chains and that there was no grass on the property, just dirt.

Many of the animals reportedly had skin diseases and other health issues and were thin, the report states.

Deputies released photos of some of the rescued animals, who appear to be emaciated. One of the dogs is losing hair on its hindquarters.

Wright’s bail is set at $80,000, according to jail records.

Human Society of Tulsa workers recently rescued 58 Chihuahuas from a woman’s north Tulsa home. City officials contacted the agency after learning that the home was overrun with dogs.
