Florida: As Judy Geneva's case shows, the news story announcing you've been mauled by a pit bull is just the beginning of your fight to get your life back

FLORIDA -- When you read one of the news stories about the attack on Judy Geneva ("Florida: BSCO concludes investigation on pit bull attack"), you don't really get the full effect of the horrific mauling and the devastating results.

The earlier news story has a file photo of Ms. Geneva, a scene shot of the outside her residence and of a Sheriff's Office spokesperson saying they concluded their investigation and sent the case file to the State Attorney's Office.

But what is it really like for Ms. Geneva and her family members and friends to deal with a vicious pit bull attack - and its aftermath?

Ms. Geneva's sister Irene Grissom posted on Facebook what her beloved sister is going through and the photos are horrific. This isn't just a "dog bite" which required some antibiotics and maybe some stitches. Ms. Geneva has been completely incapacitated by this pit bull attack. The physical and emotional toll it has taken on Ms. Geneva, her husband, her family and friends shows that once the media goes away, a victim's fight to recover their lives has just begun...

And to add insult to injury, Ms. Grissom says in her July 17th Facebook post that after mauling her sister and her sister's dog, it attacked the deputies who responded. They shot and killed the dog. "Ironically, the owners of the dog complained because their dog was killed and want to sue."

THEY SHOULD BE CRIMINALLY CHARGED FOR THE ATTACK ON MS. GENEVA!

This is my sister Judy Geneva, after her pit bull attack. Her
personality is there, her voice is there. They just put her
in this body for a while. We will get all of her back in time.

Wounds on the back of her arm

Walking the wheel chair, can't life her head

Judy beat lung cancer almost 30 years ago, she will
come through this too, thank to all your prayers.

A GoFundMe account has been set up to help Ms. Geneva and her family. Her sister had to take a Greyhound bus to get to the hospital to see her. They say the bills have passed $1 million dollars and I'll bet the pit bull owner doesn't have two nickels to rub together.

"Dairy Queen in PCB, Callaway and Lynn Haven will be hosting a fundraising event for Mrs. Judy Geneva. Mrs. Geneva was brutally attacked by a neighbors dog on June 21st and has been fighting for her life at Bay Medical Sacred Heart Hospital ever since. This unfortunate life changing event has taken a financial toll on the whole family. Dairy Queen needs your help in helping this family. All you have to do is come by for dinner or ice cream between 4pm and 11pm and a percentage of your total will go directly to the family."
