North Carolina: East Carolina University defensive lineman Darius Commissiong, 21, charged with Felony Animal Cruelty after police found his Shih Tzu beaten to death

NORTH CAROLINA -- East Carolina University defensive lineman Darius Commissiong (Birthdate 01/14/1995) has been dismissed from the team after he was charged Friday with animal cruelty by Greenville (N.C.) police.

Commissiong, 21, was arrested Friday and charged with one count of felony animal cruelty, according to a report from WCTI.

Police said they reported to a residence where a possible disturbance had been reported. Officers eventually made contact with the apartment resident, who agreed to meet the officers at the apartment.

Once inside, police discovered the resident's dog, a 1-year-old Shih Tzu, had died.

Animal protective services officers responded to the scene and performed a necropsy on the dog. Results revealed:

— Multiple hemorrhages of the skin and body

— Three cracked ribs, which resulted in hemorrhaging of the lungs, one of which had collapsed

— Hemorrhaging in the abdomen, left eye and brain

— Liver had been torn into pieces as a result of trauma

— Several fractured teeth

— Chronic complete fracture of the femur in the left rear leg

After gathering evidence, police charged Commissiong on Friday; police have not released details of the evidence collected.

Commissiong, who transferred to ECU last summer, played in 10 games as a reserve defensive lineman last season, making 10 tackles. He was one of the Pirates' projected starters at defensive end for the 2016 season.

"While we always want to be in a position to guide young people, unacceptable behavior such as this clearly crosses the line of humanity and simply will not be tolerated," ECU football coach Scottie Montgomery said in a statement. "There's a level of accountability which defines our program, athletics department and East Carolina University, and any conduct which isn't congruent with those values is unwelcome here."

Commissiong was booked in the Pitt County Detention Center on a $25,000 bond.

Commissiong was dismissed from the team in July 2014 for a violation of Georgia Tech's student-athlete code of conduct.
