Canada: After the case dragged on for two years, Dion MacBeth is convicted of animal cruelty

CANADA -- A Halifax man is prohibited from owning animals for four years, and has to pay a steep fine after he was convicted of animal cruelty.

Dion Connori MacBeth was charged in July of 2014 with failing to provide water and food to four cats, confining them to an enclosure with unsanitary conditions, and failing to provide one cat with adequate medical attention.

MacBeth was sentenced in September with 18 months probation, four years prohibition from owning animals, and he’ll have to pay the SPCA more than $3,000 in fines.

Dog breeder also charged
The SPCA has also charged a Nova Scotia dog breeder with three counts of animal cruelty.

Alice Ogilvie of Kings County has been charged with failing to provide an adequate source of water, confining animals to an enclosure with inadequate space, unsanitary conditions, and failing to provide an opportunity for exercise and causing an animal to be in distress.

She’s scheduled to appear in Kentville provincial court in December.

The SPCA asks that anyone who witnesses acts of animal cruelty call them at 1-888-703-7722.
