Florida: Tyree Tyson, 29, and Omega DuPont, 45, charged with animal cruelty and drug charges

FLORIDA -- FBI investigators arrested two men in Southwest Miami-Dade for their alleged involvement in selling a drug more potent than heroin, Friday.

Officials have been watching one of the subjects, identified as 45-year-old Omega Demetrius DuPont, for quite some time and on Friday, made their move in the case at a house near Southwest 171st Street and 104th Avenue.

Authorities said DuPont, was selling carfentanil, which only takes a small dose to affect the user and can even lead to death. The synthetic drug is potent enough to tranquilize elephants and serves as a powerful painkiller. It is also used on cancer patients, but the difference between a therapeutic dose and fatal dose is very small.

The scene, along Southwest 171st Street was still roped off as things began to wind down, Friday evening. Investigators wore hazmat suits due to the severity of the drug.

Carfentanil is 10,000 times more potent than morphine,” said Miami-Dade Police Detective Dan Ferrin. “Carfentanil is used as a tranquilizer for animals.”

Investigators focused on a greenhouse on the block.

7’s Skyforce HD hovered over the scene as Miami-Dade Police officers and FBI investigators carried evidence out of the house all day Friday. “They say it was an old drug house,” said neighbor Maritza Ubau.

According to investigators, DuPont sold undercover officers the drug, leading to a warrant for his arrest. Officials also arrested 29-year-old Tyree Shawon Tyson after finding a substantial amount of the drug inside the house.

Both suspects dodged 7News’ cameras after they were put in the back of a squad car.

Neighbors in the area are shocked about what is happening in their own backyard. “I just seen the officers and I heard the boom when they preceded to enter the home,” said neighbor Davita Jackson, “and I hope they hurry up at get these drugs off the street.”

At one point, officials took seven dogs off the property. (In one video clip, a neighbor described them as "pit bulls".)

Michael Fleneury said he knows the family that lives in the house. “Good people … quiet. I’m surprised; the FBI and all of this is beyond me,” he said.

However, another neighbor had a different take on the suspects. “Bad neighbors. We have problem with people,” he said. “They have a lot of people coming in and out.”

The house is just feet away from a park and a school, and neighbors said the scene unfolding is terrifying. “Kids play out here all the time,” Ubau said. “And then this is a school, you know, the kids coming out of school and anything, there could be a shooting. It’s dangerous out here.”

Sources said DuPont spent at least 14 years in a Florida prison for two separate incidences, each involving armed robbery.

Police said the suspect is the one who sold carfentanil to undercover officers on three separate occasions.

Carfentanil overdoses are on the rise in South Florida. Broward County officials announced in November that the drug has been linked to more than 50 deaths.

Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle told 7News that crackdowns like this one will continue.

She also had a message for anyone who is dealing that drug. “It’s just a matter of time before we find you, and if someone dies because of your dealing with that type of narcotic, an opiate, we are coming after you,” she said.

Other neighbors 7News spoke to on Friday said they are relieved to have the subject off the streets, and now hopefully their community is safer.
