United Kingdom: Investigators worried that matted Shih Tzu escaped from a hoarding house where other animals are suffering

UNITED KINGDOM -- This is little Kain, a dog was found wandering around a city estate with hair so badly matted he could barely see.

But look at him now after being taken in by the RSCAPCA the shih tzu has had his long, filthy hair chopped back and is now back to full health.

He was found in Braunstone Close, Braunstone in Leicester on November 30, wandering around and struggling to see through his hair.

And officers are very worried that there might be more pets living in squalor at the same place, reports the Leicester Mercury.

RSPCA inspector Sally Kearns, who is investigating, appealed for Kain's former owner to get in touch to assure the charity that no more animals are at risk.

"Poor Kain was in such a state when he was found by a member of public - he has clearly not been cared for in some time. His fur was extremely matted. He was taken to a stay dog kennel and they immediately called us.

"We went and took some photos and then clipped his hair. There weren't any health issues in Kain's case but obviously we would like to have a word with the owner. We're worried about where he was being kept and if there are other animals there."

She said it was a relief to find there were no sores on Kain's body when his fur was clipped. She said: "Clipping dogs isn't just a cosmetic thing - it's important because long, dirty hair can cause skin problems and hide growths.

"It also causes problems if dirty hair is weighing them down.

"Cases like this are fairly regularly, sadly, and sometimes the matted hair can affect their movement and make it very hard for them to walk."

The shih tzu has been named Kain by the RSPCA officers looking after him at Woodside Animal Centre in Braunstone Frith, Leicester.

He had no microchip so the charity is relying on the public to help them find out where he came from.

Anyone who knows anything about Kain is urged to contact the RSPCA in complete confidence on 0300 123 8018.
