Florida: Lonise Thomas, 57, arrested after starving horses seized; charged with animal cruelty

FLORIDA -- The 57-year-old man whose horses were found neglected on his property near Indiantown was arrested Wednesday, according to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.

Lonise “Buck” Thomas (aka Buck Thomas) faces one count of misdemeanor animal cruelty. He bonded out of the Martin County jail on $50,000 bail the same day.

On Monday, Lonise Marvin Thomas surrendered 11 horses and one donkey that were living in poor condition on his property south of southwest Martin Highway along southwest Warfield Boulevard.

The animals were taken to the Equine Rescue and Adoption Foundation in Palm City, a non-profit that aids neglected and abandoned horses, where they will be nursed back to health.

Investigators said the single charge was related to a 14-year-old horse “that appeared to be in the worst condition.”

Medical staff determined the horse was severely malnourished, had rain rot, a bacterial infection, as well as hoof and leg problems.

It’s unclear if Thomas will face additional charges for the other animals in custody.
