New Hampshire: Portsmouth police arrest Ken Hale on animal cruelty charges

NEW HAMPSHIRE -- A man accused of animal cruelty surrendered to city police Tuesday night.

Kenneth Hale, 59, with a last known address of 886 State St. unit 33 in Portsmouth, allegedly left a cat in squalid conditions and without food or water for perhaps months, said Sgt. Kuffer Kaltenborn.

Hale has been charged with three Class A misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty. Earlier Tuesday, police asked for the public's help to locate the suspect.

Hale was released on $7,500 personal recognizance bail. He is scheduled for arraignment Dec. 4 in the Portsmouth Circuit Court.

Portsmouth police expressed "gratitude to the citizens of Portsmouth, those residing in our surrounding communities and to the media and its affiliates who assisted in this investigation."

The investigation began Sept. 22 when a landlord phoned police to say sounds of an animal in distress were heard coming from the apartment, according to police.

Based on those sounds, police gained entry to the apartment and found an adult female tortoiseshell cat suffering from "severe malnutrition and dehydration," Kaltenborn said.
