Police add charge in dog abuse case

NEW YORK -- The Hudson woman arrested and charged Sept. 4 in connection with a dog found tied up and abandoned Aug. 30 near the city’s Amtrak station has been additionally charge.

Brittany J. Pinnell, 22, was charged Sept. 10 with abandonment of a disabled animal, a misdemeanor under New York State Agriculture and Markets Law, after being charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, a class E felony, on Sept. 4, along with her boyfriend, Juan Cintron, 42, also of Hudson.



“We believe she was the one who actually tied up and abandoned the dog,” said Hudson police spokeswoman Lt. Lynne Finn.

A Hudson police officer discovered the severely malnourished dog tied to a fence near the Amtrak station in the early morning hours of Aug. 30. The 5-year-old male pit bull-type mix was described as being near death.

Police reported that 1 foot of rope had been used to tie the animal to the fence, away from the railroad tracks. While a dog that size should have weighed roughly 85 pounds, the dog weighed between 25 and 30 pounds.

Hudson police said they received tips regarding the two suspects through phone calls, email and social media, which led to their arrest.

Pinnell and Cintron told police they had recently been legally evicted from their home and chose to abandon the dog in an abandoned area by the railroad tracks, police said. The dog is recovering at the Columbia-Greene Humane Society shelter.


Cintron was remanded to the Columbia County Jail on $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 bond, while Pinnell was remanded to the Columbia County Jail on $1,000 cash bail or $3,000 bond.

Pinnell is due back in Hudson city court Oct. 10, while Cintron is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 24. Cintron has a higher bail than Pinnell due to prior arrests, Moore said.
