Harris pleaded guilty as charged Thursday to a single count of first-degree animal cruelty, a felony, and was sentenced to 30 days in jail. With credit for time served and good behavior, he was expected to be released Thursday evening.
Superior Court Judge John McCarthy also ordered Harris to reimburse Baby Jerry's owners for any money they've spent on vet bills and gave him a lifetime ban on ever owning animals.
Harris was arrested Aug. 27 after his neighbor, Martha Tigner, called 911 when she and her daughter saw Harris grab the 9-month-old long-haired Chihuahua and chuck it out a second-floor window in their apartment building.
Baby Jerry hit a concrete sidewalk below and suffered what might have been a hairline fracture in one hind leg, court records show.
Harris told police he didn't throw the dog out the window and renewed earlier allegations that he'd been the victim of a burglary he believed was committed by Tigner's family, court records show.
Police reported there was no evidence of a burglary and that Harris appeared to have "mental/drug" issues when they spoke to him about the alleged burglary the day before Baby Jerry was injured.
Deputy prosecutor Patrick Hammond said Thursday that Baby Jerry's owners report the pooch is recovering well.
