WASHINGTON -- Three people were arrested early Thursday morning after a Wenatchee woman fired a rifle at one of two people who are accused of torturing and killing her dog.
The dog is a dachshund-mix found buried behind the residence where the shooting occurred, said Sgt. Jim West.
Sarah L. Keffeler, 37, was arrested on suspicion of first-degree assault, domestic violence. Jamar W. Stipek, 20, and Keffeler’s 15-year-old son were arrested on suspicion of first-degree animal cruelty.
All the charges are felonies. The dog was killed, West said, because Stipek and the teen decided the dog was a nuisance.
Police responded to a house in the 700 block of Orondo Avenue after a call came into the RiverCom dispatch center at 1:46 a.m. The caller said a woman inside the residence was shooting at him.
Officers, along with Chelan County sheriff’s deputies and State Patrol troopers surrounded the house and apprehended Keffeler as she ran out the back door, West said.
About six people were living in the house, West said. Those included Keffeler, Stipek and Keffeler’s son.
Keffeler had found out earlier in the evening that her dog had been tortured and killed, then went out drinking for a couple of hours, West said. She returned home, grabbed a rifle and began shooting up the inside stairs where Stipek and the boy were. West said numerous shots were fired, at least one coming close to hitting Stipek. No one, however, was struck by the bullets.
When shooting started, the 15-year-old jumped out a second-story window but was not injured, West said.
