First responders save poodle from burning apartment

INDIANA -- First responders saved a dog that was barely conscious from a burning apartment Sunday afternoon.

Firefighters with the Indianapolis Fire Department responded to a fire at an apartment building in the 4100 block of North Emerson Avenue just before 2:30 p.m.

Callers originally reported that somebody was trapped inside the building, but all residents were evacuated and no entrapment was found, IFD said.

During search efforts, a firefighter found a 6-year-old poodle named Mandy that was barely conscious, IFD said.

A paramedic administered oxygen therapy through a mask and monitored the dog for recovery.

Two other medics assisted as the dog struggled to regain consciousness. The three medics started an IV line with fluids.

After 20 minutes, the dog was moving and was taken to a nearby animal hospital.

IFD Chief Dan Hansman estimated damage to be around $75,000.

Apartment management was working to relocate residents within the complex.

IFD said the Project Breathe Mask has been used by IFD since 2010 when Invisible Fence donated one to each IFD apparatus. The specialized mask is designed to specifically fit the snout of an animal.
