Cathedral City girl, 1, hospitalized after dog attack

CALIFORNIA -- A 1-year-old Cathedral City girl was rushed to a local hospital Friday evening after she suffered bites to her face during an attack by a pit bull, according to Riverside County Animal Services.

The incident occurred shortly before 5 p.m. at a home on San Susanna Avenue, said Riverside County Animal Services spokesman John Welsh, in a news release.

"We believe the girl was bitten in her ear, lip and cheek, based on conversations with law enforcement," Welsh said.

Her condition was not immediately available. But Cathedral City police Sgt. Scott Sharpe said the girl is expected to recover.

The 3-year-old dog, owned by the girl's family, was surrendered to Animal Services for humane euthanasia, Welsh said.

This was the second time in the past week that a Coachella Valley child was attacked by a dog, which then had to be euthanized.

On July 18, a 5-year-old boy was bitten multiple times by a 2-year-old male German shepherd- Shar Pei mix, in Thermal.
