Sheriff: 2 dogs killed in possible crossbow attack

SOUTH CAROLINA -- Union County Sheriff David Taylor said deputies are investigating after two dogs were found dead in a fenced yard.

Taylor said a homeowner called deputies Saturday morning after he found his two Great Danes dead after they had been shot with what appeared to be arrows from a crossbow.

Deputies responded to the home on Old Buncombe Road in the Cross Keys community, where Taylor said deputies quickly saw that the shooting was no accident.

"There's no doubt it was intentional because the dogs were inside a fence," Taylor said. "These two dogs were targeted for some reason. We're going to try to find out why."

Taylor said the case will be assigned to an investigator Monday.

If and when deputies are able to track down the suspect, Taylor said that person will likely face more than animal cruelty charges.

"Someone also had to be trespassing on this man's land in order to shoot his dogs," Taylor said.

Taylor said the sheriff's office has seen a greater number of animal abuse cases recently.

"We've already seen more animal cruelty complaints and cases where animals have been shot so far this year than we have in years past."
