Jerome Moore, 63, was initially charged with intentional killing of an animal, aggravated cruelty to animals and reckless endangerment according to arrest records.
The dog survived the shooting and is mending, according to law enforcement, so those charges may be changing.
According to Harriman Police Detective Dan Schneider’s affidavit of complaint, officers responded to a call that Moore had shot a small dog on March 24.
Upon arrival, police recovered a firearm that witnesses said was used in the shooting. The weapon was seized and placed into evidence, Schneider said.
“Moore admitted to shooting the animal one time with a pellet gun, which contradicted witness statements, officers’ observations and medical reports of the animal, which confirmed that the animal was shot three times causing injuries with a high-velocity round,” Schneider said.
“The dog currently was alive but in critical condition,” the detective continued.
“This contradicted the statement of being accidental to being an intentional act in an attempt to kill the animal.”
The firearm is a .22 I.R. semi-automatic rifle with a scope.
“The shooting took place in a close proximity to South Harriman Baptist Church, Bowers Elementary, busy Ruritan Road and directly behind a business [at] which children were present,” the affidavit said.
Moore is scheduled to appear on the charges on June 27 in Roane County General Sessions Court.
