Indiana: Cats seized from breeder in animal neglect case

INDIANA -- Several cats were rescued Friday in Warrick County.

They were found in what authorities say were deplorable conditions.

Animal control officials say they've taken several complaints about a house that had numerous caged cats in an out-building, possibly other cats in the home, as well as dead cats on the property.

When they arrived, they say they seized 8 cats that were not in suitable living conditions for any animal.

We're told the cats had no food, little or dirty water, there was a very strong urine odor coming from the shed, and many of the cats were suffering from health issues.

Animal Control Officer, Danielle Barnes says, "Most of the cats have wheezing, upper respiratory, nasal discharge, eye discharge, several of them have fleas, they all have overgrown nails and the litter boxes, the litter boxes were very full. They probably hadn't been changed for months."

We are told the homeowner said that they'd had the cats for a breeding operation and that they only check on the cats once a week.

At this point, no arrests have been made.

On Friday, the vet determined these cats were neglected.  That allows Animal Control officials to proceed in building a case and submitting it to the prosecutor's office.
