Maryland: Police allege children abused puppy in Leonardtown

MARYLAND -- Two Leonardtown children abused a small puppy last month, according to charging papers filed against their mother, by kicking and punching the pet and throwing it in and out of a trash bin.

Megan Jeanne Young, 37, was charged Thursday with a misdemeanor animal-cruelty offense in court papers stating she told the 7-year-old boy and 6-year-old girl to "take the puppy outside to potty train it," but she was not watching them from the window during the March 28 incident at Gregory Drive.

A witness contacted police that afternoon from a business in the town, prompting the investigation of his account, court papers state, that two or three children were "kicking the dog in the face and body back and forth, punching it several times in the head, tossing the puppy in the air and letting it fall to the ground, and throwing the puppy in and out of a dumpster."

When law officers questioned Young's children, the 7-year-old boy said, "I did what needed to be done. The dog wasn't doing what it was supposed to be doing," according to a charges application against Young filed Thursday by Trooper Stephanie Regina of the Maryland State Police.

The investigation assisted by St. Mary's animal control officer Joy Wilson determined that the 8-week-old puppy had not received its immunizations from a veterinarian, court papers state. Wilson took the puppy to Tidewater Veterinary Hospital in Charlotte Hall for an evaluation.

"No immediate injuries were observed, [but] a full veterinary report is still being conducted," according to the charging papers, stating that the puppy is now at the Tri-County Animal Shelter in Hughesville.
