North Carolina: Woman searching for Tammy Griffin's 16 abandoned cats: ‘I have never cried so much’

NORTH CAROLINA --  Kathy Kamins and others have been working tirelessly since early December to find 16 cats that apparently were dumped on the side of a Johnston County road.

“It’s one of the most horrible things that I have ever been through with animals,” Kamins, of Angier, said in an interview Wednesday.

All but one of the cats had been checked out of the Cumberland County Animal Shelter, a shelter official said.

Prosecutors say the cats were then dumped, not far from Perezlazaro’s Johnston County home, in late November by Terry Beasley and Tamara Perezlazaro (aka Tammy Griffin and about 15 other aliases) at Cornwallis Road near Interstate 40 in Garner.

Only nine of them have been rescued, Kamins said.

The accused, Perezlazaro and Beasley, also from Johnston County, appeared in front of a Johnston County judge Tuesday, according to television station WRAL. Each was charged with one count of animal cruelty and one count of animal abandonment.

Note: A lot of times prosecutors initially only charge one count in order to get them in front of a judge while they continue with the investigation. Misdemeanor animal cruelty is considered a property crime- the same level of crime for someone who shoplifted a DVD from Walmart (I know. It's pathetic.). However, there could be more charges coming - including much more serious FELONY charges for fraud, theft, etc.

Most of the cats had not spent much time outside and some were declawed, didn’t have all their teeth or needed medication, Kamins said.

After being dumped, some of the friendlier cats made their way to nearby homes, clawing at doors to find food and a warm place to sleep, she said.

Kamins, an animal advocate, and fellow volunteers have been working almost daily to find the remaining cats, crawling on the ground through December’s cold and wet weather to set traps with sardines.

“I have never been through this with animals,” she said. “I am completely exhausted, and I have never cried so much.”

Many of the cats were microchipped, said Jennifer Hutchinson-Tracy the shelter manager for Cumberland County Animal Control.

Hutchinson-Tracy had an understanding with Perezlazaro, that she would be allowed to adopt cats from Cumberland County if she agreed to rehome or send the cats to reputable rescues, she said.

“(Perezlazaro) was to keep us updated as to where the cats went and was not to have more than 9 of these cats in her home at any time to keep in compliance with the Animal Welfare Act,” Hutchinson-Tracy said.

OK and before you gave her the next set of cats, did you bother to check and verify that she had indeed found homes for the previous group you'd given her? Did you call any of the people listed that supposedly adopted these cats? Did you verify anything???

The shelter relies on people like Perezlazaro during busy times of the year to take care of cats when the shelter nears full capacity, Hutchinson-Tracy said.

The Cumberland County shelter can handle a maximum of between 150 and 200 kittens and at some points, nearly 75 to 100 additional kittens are in foster homes, she said.

Hutchinson-Tracy did say that she had became concerned that Perezlazaro was hoarding cats, and contacted both the Department of Agriculture and Johnston County Animal Control. However, no problems with Perezlazaro were reported, she said.

NEARLY 80 CATS GIVEN TO THEM IN JUST 8 MONTHS' TIME!!

Between March and November 2016, Perezlazaro had adopted 79 cats under their agreement, Hutchinson-Tracy said.

One cat, that was not dumped off in November, was taken back to the Cumberland County shelter from Perezlazaro’s home, Hutchinson-Tracy said.

Perezlazaro is no longer allowed to adopt any more cats from the Cumberland County shelter.

Instead of telling us this woman is not allowed to adopt any more cats... DUH... why don't you tell us that you are completely changing the way you hand over animals with no verification that the person has actually found a home for the previous animal you gave them, that no one thought it odd that some hick and her boyfriend were able to supposedly find all these great adopters for these cats when you - the shelter - weren't able to. Tell us you'll have consequences for shelter staff who were responsible for this huge error which resulted in cats dying and being abandoned to starve to death, be hit by cars, attacked by dogs and coyotes... Tell us more than "Oh she can't adopt from us any more."

Hutchinson-Tracy said that finding more of the missing cats may be difficult until spring because they may be hunkered down against the cold weather or have found homes with new families.

“You never know,” said Tracy. “We’ve had animals resurface after months and years, so it’s still possible.”

Johnston County District Attorney Susan Doyle said her office is still looking into the case and more charges could be filed, WRAL reported.

Kamins said she plans to keep looking for the missing felines, and encouraged people with information about the cats to call 919-889-0085.

If the shelter gave them 79 cats and we know that 16 were dumped, where are the rest??? The shelter hasn't made any statement saying they've verified the locations of the other cats. They may have been dumping them all along in order to get cat food and supplies that they apparently were flipping on Facebook group pages. I'm glad the cats were microchipped so at least even if they find a deceased cat, they can trace it, and not keep looking for that one.

When I read this article, the first thing I thought was that these might be the poor cats:

Cats found dead, injured from gunshot wounds in Burke County, North Carolina

Who's to say that they weren't doing this in other locations, though, with cats that weren't microchipped? This article from May 2016 is in Rockingham County. That's not too far away from Johnston County.

Eleven dead cats found in crates at separate locations in Rockingham County, North Carolina

Note: If someone knows for sure that these aliases are not the same person let me know and I'll edit the posts. Other than the addresses matching up, the names being listed on numerous arrest/voting/etc. sites and the seemingly matching photographs posted, I haven't yet seen an official press release from the sheriff or a media story that connects the names. Authorities need to contact Facebook to obtain all of her identities used. This will also give them her IP address which will tie them all to her.

  1. Thank you for this comprehensive overview of the perfidy of these two lowlife pieces of shit. Your research is excellent.

For the record, cats that survived the fire stayed at my home until they were taken in by Siglinda Scarpa at Goathouse. It was obvious that the cats had been in a fire as they were black with soot and smelled of smoke. The cats that died were in carriers or kennels in the kitchen. Some, supposedly, got out and escaped into the woods.

Thank you so much for your work on this.
