South Dakota: Kharim Bivins charged with felony animal cruelty, accused of torturing a puppy to death

SOUTH DAKOTA -- A Lincoln County man is in jail and is being charged with felony animal cruelty after killing a puppy.

Kharim Bivins was allegedly in an argument when prosecutors say he beat and stabbed the puppy to death.

In court on Thursday, prosecutors said along with the cut to its neck, the puppy also had broken teeth, bleeding in its ear, and fluid in its lungs.

Veterinarians tried to help the puppy, but it ultimately died.

CAREER CRIMINAL
As for Bivins, his criminal record goes back to 2005. He's faced charges for
domestic abuse, assault and several D-U-I's.

According to the department of corrections website, Bivins recently got out of
prison in October 2015.

His new charges include Felony animal cruelty. That law has only been on the books for about two years. Animal advocates say the law helps those who can't speak for themselves.

As of today's date, Bivins is enjoying "three hots and a cot" at the Minnehaha County Jail.
