Boy Doing Better Since Pit Bull Attack

SOUTH CAROLINA -- Two-year-old George Sumrall is recovering from losing both of his ears and scalp to a pit bull attack.

This past May News 19  told you about the incident which led to the Sumter boy's injuries.  He was attacked by a pit bull after wandering into a neighbor's backyard.

The family has been in Cincinnati since May at the Shriners  Hospital, and Sunday the boy came home to visit friends and family.

"George came into our care in May, we flew him from Columbia to Cincinnati so that he can have reconstructive surgery for the dog attack that he received," said Fred Sharpe with the Jamil Shriners.

After hearing what happened to George, Sharpe and the Shriners covered the families medical bill.

"George was not given much of a chance. When he came into our care and we dont  give up and we dont quit we go the extra mile, whatever it takes to try to help a child," said Sharpe.

George had to be flown to Cincinnati so that he could have reconstructive surgery.

"They said it was nothing that they could do for him and Shriners took him and because of them I have him today," said George's mother, April Sumrall.

George had skin grafts taken from his back and legs to create him a new scalp. He'll have to wait until he's eight years old for surgeons to work on giving him new ears.

"I think this is a testament to what Shriners do and why we do what we do," said Sharpe.

The Shriners say George is under their medical care until he is 18. His mother April says she is just thankful for everything the shriners have done for her.

"I love all these men for this and and if it wasn't for them I wouldn't have my baby," said Sumrall.

The family will head back to Cincinnati on Monday so that George can continue treatment.
