Ohio: How many times do they have to say don't leave a baby alone with a dog??? Baby girl critical after attack from family dog, a Border Collie Chow mix

OHIO -- Xenia police confirm a 9-month-old girl is in critical condition after being bitten by the family dog—a border collie chow mix.

The baby was being watched by a family member, according to police, and when the sitter stepped away briefly, the dog attacked the child.

The child was transported to Greene Memorial Hospital, then transferred to Dayton Children's Hospital.

“For some unknown reason, the dog attacked the baby,” said Sgt. Gary Johnson with the Xenia Police Division.

“Well, any time you have an infant, the infant is going to react, the infant is going to move around and make noises, and dogs are going to react to that in different ways and there’s just no way to know… you might feel like you have a gentle dog, but you don’t know how that dog is going to react to that new baby in the house and it becomes upset, or something like that.

"So, you’ve just got to keep an eye on them, try to keep them out of reach of the dog and make sure that you’re doing everything you can to keep them safe,” Sgt. Johnson said.

No criminal charges are being considered.

The dog was removed by animal control officers and will be quarantined for 10 days.
